Pregnant after a Loss

Anyone NOT get a doppler?

I am toying with the idea of not getting one.  I think I might be too anxious of a person to deal with it, but I also see that getting the reassurance towards the end of the first trimester through when the baby moves would be awesome.

If you decided NOT to get a doppler, do you think it was a good decision?

Re: Anyone NOT get a doppler?

  • I did not get one. It would have driven me crazy. I haven't missed it, although that's not to say being PGaL is easy or that I'm not jumping out of my skin every time I go to the doctor. I also have a very understanding doctor who said I could come in whenever for doppler checks, although I've only taken her up on it once.

  • I actually was just looking at them on ebay this morning.  Last time I didn't want to get one bc I thought I'd be more paranoid/freaked if I couldn't find the heartbeat.  Now, I'm think the reassurance will be nice once my weekly/frequent appt stop after 1st tri....    so up in the air!

  • i didn't get one. me and my husband talked about it and figured it would cause me more stress then relief (like if i couldn't find it) and decided against it. and like you, i'm an anxious person already so while it may provide me with relief, it may also stress me out way more then the relief it provides so it was a tough decision for me but that's just my opinion. i know alot of women who say they couldn't have gotten by without it, it's all about personality and opinion.

but see, i also didn't get beta's early and avoided all tests that weren't necessary because i didn't want any extra stress added.

i went with the flow on this one, and i think that was a good decision personally for me. so far, we're baking wonderfully and i might even have a big baby - at his anatomy scan he went up to the 93rd pecentile! (that's insane... just saying ha)

  • I didnt get one. Not only was the cost a deterant but I thought I would be too obsessive over it. I wanted to "try" to enjoy this pregnancy as normally as I could. Not sure if I accomplished that or not, but I think a doppler would have made it much harder!

  • I didn't get one. DH made that call, but I really wish I did. I feel it wsould have eased my mind alot.

Also when I started to feel movement I had a period over a few weeks where LO was stubborn and was really slack on movement, and I lost plenty of sleep because I would not go to sleep till I felt him.

With a doppler I could have just checked and went to bed.

  • I'm not getting one.  I thought about it, but I am too cheap.  Also, I don't think there is much to do if there is no h/b.  KWIM?

  • I didn't get one.  I kind of felt that it was a short enough time between appointments in the beginning that I would survive, and later it would be kind of moot because I would be feeling movement.  Yes, there were times I wished I had it, but they were not $60 worth of times I don't think.  I don't regret not getting it so far.

  • I have thought about it, but i will not be getting one. To spend that kind of money to use it for such a short time is not for me. I also think I would freak out oo much about it.

  • I didn't and I'm glad... I am an anxious person by nature and while I know some are very reassured by it, I would have to be checking umpteen times a day to feel comforted and god forbid the one time I couldn't get the hb I'd be a mess. Plus its money I'd rather spend on baby things or pampering to help me relax as much as possible, and you use it for such a short time, it didn't seem worth it. The doctor checks once a month at my appt and after the a/s I started feeling movement so that is really more reassuring than anything.  Plus its been good to help me just let go in between appts... I get anxious everytime we've had a u/s or doppler check... knowing those come at specific intervals is good.

  • I didn't get one because my DH said it would only feed into my craziness and I agreed it would too!

  • I looked into it, but decided it was best to not get one. Sure the wait time between appts was horrible, but I'm about 100% sure it's not as bad as not being able to find our baby with a doppler &  freaking myself out over nothing. I'll be 29 weeks tomorrow, & still think it was a good idea. To each their own though. I have nothing against owning one. Heck, if someone I knew had one, I'd probably ask them to play nurse for me to!

  • I didn't get one.  It was partially a financial decision (trying to watch the budget for things we didn't need) and partially because I was worried I'd freak myself the heck out.

The strange thing is that I did better with the time period from the end of symptoms till movement than I did with later on in 2nd/3rd Tri when baby would have lazy days.  I think that was in part because at that point if there was an issue there was potential for baby to survive on the outside.

  • My DH refused to allow me to buy one.  He thought that it would add to my anxiety if for some reason I could not find the HB one day.  I think it probably was a good decision because I probably would have become obsessed with it.

  • I did not get one.  I didn't want the added worry if I couldn't find a hb.  Plus once LO starts moving around, there is no need for a doppler.   My dr also said she didn't want me to have any added stress and that is usually what dopplers do to women who have experienced a loss.  I would stick with my decision if I had to do it over again!

  • I am not getting one. I have an ultrasound machine at work, and a Doppler at work. I take a look with the ultrasound machine once a week. I tried with the doppler at work, I was 14 weeks and I couldn't find anything. I had a Doppler at a prenatal appointment and 2 midwives tried and couldn't find a heartbeat. So it's too much stress for me. I'm 15 weeks and patiently waiting to feel movement.
  • I am not planning on getting one for the same reasons.  I would probably be OCD with it!

  • I didn't, DH would have shot down the idea and as PP stated it would have driven me nuts trying to find the hb/figure out if I had it right.

Also being that I have a home care service doing my 17P shots they check the baby's hb once a week and then if I have a doc appt I get an extra listen so I felt that was enough to keep me at bay until movement picks up.

  • I didn't get one and I don't regret it.  Like PPs, I was also concerned that it might end up causing more stress than relief, especially earlier on when it isn't always easy to find the HB.  Although I don't regret my decision, I definitely would get nervous before each doctor appointment before I started feeling the baby move.  I almost always held my breath that moment the doctor turned the doppler on, hoping that the HB would still be going strong.  I just tried my best to have faith that everything would be OK.
