another PT ? - anyone have a 4 yr old still in pull-ups at night?

t was potty trained pretty young - a little after 2 years, but is no where near being night time potty trained and he is 4 years old. i talked to the pedi about it at his 4 yr appt and he said they dont even worry about it until they are 6, but 4 seems so old to me. he has such a full bladder that he is now wearing 2 pull-ups at night.

anyone else have a 4 year old that is still in pull-ups overnight? please tell me that my kid wont still be wetting the bed when he's 13!

  • My 4 year old daughter is still in pull ups at night and she wakes up with them wet every morning.  My son was in pullups at night until almost 6, then he just all of a sudden started staying dry.  Our ped said it's not really a problem until they are closer to 8!   When my son was soaking through I would put a Depends boost pad in the pullup and it helped him stop soaking through.

  • Yep and, like your pedi, she said not to worry about it until he is closer to 6.
  • oh thanks for the tip about depends! i might have to go that route. and maybe the pedi said 8 instead of 6 - but doesnt that still seem so late? oh well, thanks for letting me know my son isnt the only one out there still in pull-ups =)
  • My 4.5 year old is still in the overnight DIAPERS cause the pull ups leak. We are nowhere close to being done with them Sad  Can't wait until we are !
  • Totally normal!  Andrew doesn't wear a pull up still but that is only because he was ripping them on in his sleep and then he'd pee all over the place Tongue Tied.  We have to take him to the bathroom 1-3 hours after he falls asleep, depending on how close to bed he had anything to drink, and then DH takes him again before he goes to sleep (around midnight) and sometimes I'll still take him yet again when I wake up to pee around 2-3am Surprise.  Now if he doesn't have anything to drink after dinner (which is rare) then we can take him once and be fine.  I don't expect him to be able to go through the night anytime soon and I'm not sure he'll even be able to get up to go on his own anytime soon.
  • We were in pull ups for a while and then when I had to change the sheets EVERY day, I switched back to diapers. When he started to be dry more nights than wet, we went back to pullups.  Now he's dry about half the time but still in pull ups. (He's 4.5).
Nobody said life would be easy, they just promised it would be worth it.

  • It might not be anything to worry about, but something to keep in mind is that bedwetting can be  a sign of gluten sensitivity. Your pedi probably wont tell you that.

  • Still in pull-ups here too at 4.5.  I just replied to a FB post that I'm pretty sure I'll be packing pullups in Will's college suitcase. :)
  • We aren't in pullups only because she refuses.  We have to take her potty between 10:30 and 11:30 (bedtime is 7:30) every night, then she'll sleep through.  But she never wakes up that she has to pee, and when we forget or go too late, the bed is wet.  I feel like I've heard of more pullup/ take the kid to the bathroom mom's lately.  I think nighttime is the secret part of pt'ing that no one talks about.  It is so dependent, some kids sleep lightly and can wake up, some can't, some can hold their bladder longer, etc.

  • My boys were both over three when we stopped using diapers.  My oldest went straight to underpants with no overnight accidents (except a few when we forgot to have him use the potty before going to sleep).  My youngest will be 4 in Jan and has a pull-up overnight.  There have been several times when he's woken up dry for a week, so we've tried underpants.  But that's led to a wet bed in the early morning every time.  I'm not worried about it, although I got tired of buying pullups, so I made some cloth trainers.
