Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Crib bumpers

My LO is 6 months old and has just started to roll around while sleeping.  He keeps waking himself up in the middle of the night.  When I go in there he is screaming because he hit his head on the side of the crib.  I know you aren't supose to put bumpers in.  Does anyone else know what I can do?  I rolled up 2 towels and put them under the sheets so they would cradel him but he is some how getting out of that now.  Please help!  I need some sleep.

Re: Crib bumpers

  • I made DS's bumpers with a thin layer of low-loft batting, which makes me pretty confident that they're not going to cause breathing problems. I say get a set of thin bumpers, or try breathable bumpers.

The case against bumpers is based on 12 incidences of crib death that were possibly associated with bumpers over the course of a year. Don't get me wrong, 12 dead babies is tragic, but I'm not terribly concerned given the statistical insignificance of the number, being that it's such a tiny percentage of infants deaths overall.

  • We put in breathable bumpers when this started happening with DD.

These are "safer" and have worked well for us.

You can find them just about any baby store now (or online of course)

  • I put the bumper back in around 5 months when he kept waking himself up in the middle of the night . We had the breathable bumper in and that didn't really help the situation.
  • We've had breathable bumpers since day 1 and have been happy with them. They obviously aren't super thick and fluffy like regular bumpers, so he can still bump them, but he never hurts himself, so I guess it's better than hitting the crib rails or getting a limb stuck.

I always think it is not worth the risk.  Loss of a little sleep vs. a serious problem.  Take the loss of sleep. I would feel absolutely horrible if something happened to C just because I needed a little sleep.

  • I was given the suggestion to weave the bumpers thru the slats so that the bumpers are curved and pulled tight thru the crib slats.  The curves provide breathing space around the bumper and slats if baby "bumps" against them.  Haven't tried it, but might because my DD wakes up from hitting her head against the slats constantly!

  • I weaved the bumper in and out of the slats and it works great and I am not nervous at all about her breathing.
