So LOs pediatrician is almost certain he has a milk allergy, still waiting for a referral to a allergist. I think that soy may also be bothering him. On WIC, my choices are cow's milk, or soy milk. I might be a little early to be thinking and worrying about this since DS has not been tested officially yet.(Soy is a big allergy for his father though) We have eliminated dairy from his diet and he is doing much better. There is still definitely another allergy though.
But it makes no sense to me that there are no alternatives to both. 70% of milk allergic kids are also allergic to soy. My son cannot be the only exception given those statistics.
Its so frustrating because my fiance lost his decent paying full time job and all he could find is part time minimum wage jobs.Alternative food is so expensive. (Fiance has many allergies himself) But maybe I am jumping the gun here and he is fine with soy. (Our other possible culprit is eggs)
Re: WIC and food allergies
I "think" that with a Doctors note they can make exceptions and do a custom plan for your DS. I would wait until after the testing and ask about it.
Edit: spelling
hopefully he's not allergic.. i would get him tested asap though.
If he will have to eliminate milk and soy and your options are rice milk and a few others which is a lot more expensive than regular WCM.. i would contact the manufacturer of Rice Milk (or what ever you are planing to go with) and spill your heart to them and maybe they will sell it to you at whole sale price and in bulk. I've seen people do this but for other reasons.
Do you have insurance? Call them / write to them and see if they can cover all or a portion. Tell them that you can't afford it and if you start giving him the only option you can afford it will send him to the hospital which is a bigger cost for the insurance company than offering to pay a portion for his special milk (at least the difference). It is a medical reason. If they decline, write again and again.. call and call (my friend got all of her formula covered after she called the 4th time)
The good thing about alternative milks is that most you can stock up on.. They don't need to be refrigerated until it's opened. So maybe there is a vendor that can offer you a bulk purchase.
My heart goes out to you b/c i know how expensive it is. I'm thankful we can afford it but we had to scale down on so much just so i can shop at these specialty food stores.
We have had a few scares, we are positive he has allergies, just to what, we have no idea. He has an epipen, just in case now and its taking forever to get a referral to the allergist.
We have a costco near us, we bought a thing of 12 quarts of rice milk (what he has been drinking since we eliminated dairy) for $15 which is much cheaper that it would be in stores. Actually, right after I posted this, I found the rice milk there.
WHHHHAAAAT!? you found rice milk at costco!? I have never found it there before, even asked employees there if they carry it and they usually look at me like i have three heads.
I'm calling them today b/c if they don't carry it, i will beg them to!
Also -does your insurance require a referral? Thankfully you at least have an epipen, but i would get him tested asap.. knowing what he's allergic to and what to avoid is crucial.
