Food Allergy

Ahhh allergy fears while "trialing" foods...

I was NOT this nervous about trying new foods with DD, but that's because I didn't have as many food allergies then as I do now! I keep looking at everything through "allergy eyes"--you know, watching DS like a hawk with every new food. We've been introducing some new foods every weekend (since he's at daycare during the week--I don't want them doing that, and I also don't want to do it at night right before bed). He did great with green beans, oats, etc. This weekend we tried wheat. I mixed Cream of Wheat with some fruit puree. He loved it--ate it Saturday. Tried it again on Sunday. Sunday afternoon his cheeks were red and he had some pimples. I instantly think allergy--either from the wheat or the fact that DD was eating cheetos and feeding DS Cheerios with her cheesy fingers. DS was on milk-based formula for 3 weeks and did OK (just got horribly constipated from it) so I don't think he has a milk allergy but he's been on Alimentum since almost 7 months so who knows. DH of course scoffs at my paranoia--we were out in the sun, he had sunscreen on his face (so possibly some clogged pores), etc. Oh how I wish I could think like DH does!

Then last night we were out to dinner--the fire alarm at the place went off and DD freaked (hypersensitive to sound) so we're busy calming her down--turn around to DS and he's got fistfuls of ketchup and sucking his hands. He's never had tomato before and I know they're high in histamine. So of course I jump to get him cleaned up/stop eating the ketchup... meanwhile DD has gone to the bathroom and my SIL comes to tell me DD is asking for me (tummy ache). So I go to the bathroom and come back with DD and DH has DS on his lap, and DS is putting his fingers on DH's empty plate (he had spaghetti), picking up the leftover tomato sauce and licking it off of his fingers. Urgh, DH!

I wish I could be normal and less paranoid. And at this time DS doesn't even HAVE allergies! I'm just on allergy-alert. LOL. It's SO much different when it's *me* with the allergies and I can control my environment. I give you all so much respect with your kids. I could say "I don't know how you do it" but I get it--you do it because you HAVE to. :)

  • as moms, we are paranoid in nature.  Add food allergies to the mixture and we are a complete mess.

it's good to be on an allergy alert, but more importantly it's important to see signs if something is wrong. I can't wait until my LO is older and can actually think twice before picking up wrappers from the ground!
