Boys were in an accident, everyone ok- need help on carseats

So my DH was going to take the kids to see his parents today, and on their way out of town they got into an accident.  The front drivers side headlight area got banged in, the guy ran a red coming from CF's left side while he was turning left and had a green arrow, he obviously wasn't far out into the intersection yet, thank God, and the guy wasn't going very fast, thank God again. Everyone is fine and he drove the car away from the scene, looks like only body damage.

Here are the National Highway Traffic people's guidelines for replacing seats:

NHTSA Position

  • NHTSA recommends that child safety seats be replaced following a moderate or severe crash in order to ensure a continued high level of crash protection for child passengers.

  • NHTSA recommends that child safety seats do not automatically need to be replaced following a minor crash.

  • Minor crashes are those that meet ALL of the following criteria:

    • The vehicle was able to be driven away from the crash site;

    • The vehicle door nearest the safety seat was undamaged;

    • There were no injuries to any of the vehicle occupants;

    • The air bags (if present) did not deploy; AND

    • There is no visible damage to the safety seat

So pretty much it was what they would consider a "minor crash".  So would you replace the carseats?  Insurance said they would give us a budget up to like, I think it was $267 to replace them (they told my DH so I can't remember, he's not here.  Don't know if that's total or for each seat).

Alex is about ready to move to a 5 point booster (he's still in his Britax marathon) so this is a good opportunity to switch his (silver lining) but would you replace Si's?  It's less than a year old Britax Marathon and it honestly looks fine. I'm a carseat safety FREAK but I think it might b ok...

  • When I was in an accident, they told me seats are 100% covered for replacement in CA.

    Glad everyone is ok.

    I'd get the replaced, if you can show them how much you paid for the seat you want to change for a harness, they should apply the cost of your old seat to it.

  • I am glad they are okay, how scary for everyone involved. As for the carseat I would replace both of them. It isn't worth the what-ifs in my mind.
  • I agree with Julie.  Replace and cut the straps on the old ones.  So glad everyone is okay!

    The car seats need to be ditched. They were used today for the purpose they are intended and they are like airbags. One time and need to be replaced. We replaced Ryan's car seat after Chris was in an accident back in May and Ryan wasn't even in the seat. There is no question that I would replace a seat if a child was in the seat during an accident. It's now used and can no longer be deemed safe for future accidents.

    Ditto this--I would replace them no matter what. Glad to hear everyone is ok

  • I agree, so glad everyone is fine! sorry this happened.

  • Thanks guys, I went and got two new seats today.

    It was a helluva day but they are safe and sound and that's what's important.  Plus, I got Alex his 5 point harness booster (Graco nautilus) which we've been needing to get and I upgraded Simon to the Britax Marathon 70 (he had the regular Britax Marathon), which is new and looks much better if just for the fact that you can remove the cover without unlatching the carseat if you need to.

    And I get reimbursed for all of it, 100% so yes, absolutely, better safe than sorry.  Ugh what a nightmare!

    This...we love our Britax Frontier for a step up after the Marathon. It's so easy to use and will fit for a long time, and harnesses for a long time, too.
