Weaning from bottle to sippy

Oh my GOODNESS. So, Sophia was a breeze. She was easy to wean off of her bottle to a sippy cup. I think she spoiled me in so many respects because as a baby she was GREAT with change. As a pre-schooler...ehhh. LOL. Anyway, Isabelle is almost at the age Sophia was when I began weaning her to using a sippy cup during the day for milk. I waited a little longer for milk in the morning and at night. Because of this, I have tried a few times already to give Isabelle milk in a sippy and she practically throws the thing at me like its a live bomb. She gets really annoyed because the milk is not coming out at the flow she is accustomed. Yesterday we tried taking the little insert from inside the sippy cup and then the flow was too fast so she refused it again. I have a regular Goldilocks on my hands. Can you give me some ideas on what would be JUST RIGHT without it being a bottle? I am not going to rush it but want her totally weaned off the bottle before she is 18 months old. Hopefully sooner.

ETA: Isabelle is a pro at multiple types of sippies when it comes to water. Its only milk that she is rejecting that way.:)

TIA!

Mel

Re: Weaning from bottle to sippy

  • J hates milk in a sippy unless it's a straw one. That being said he only has milk twice a day in the morning and at night and it's still in a bottle ::hangs head in shame:: That's my fault though, I feel like I'm not ready for him to lose those bottles yet. If he has milk during the day it's in his straw sippy cup or in the individual little juice box looking things.

Good Luck with it. I really need to get on this asap cause J's pedi told me to lose the bottle at his 12 month appointment. Boo.

  • I took a long time to transition Evan. Since he was a bit older, he really didn't give me a hard time.

I'm also having a hard time with Ethan. But I think our issue is more the actual milk than the cup/bottle. I've weaned BFing to just mornings and evenings so that leaves him with a midday feeding at preschool where he is refusing regular milk. But I'm just taking it day by day.

I would just take it day by day. I personally would not go crazy trying to take the bottle away if she is rejecting the zippy cup that strongly. Take a break and try again later. Just keep offering it to her and I am sure she will eventually cave in when she realizes she has no choice. ;)

  • While I am not there yet with Ava, with Spencer I went cold turkey and early too at 11 months.  This was only b/c he would not hold the bottle himself, yet he would hold the sippy cups by himself.  This made our lives so much easier!

  • Cold turkey! She'll either take it in the sippy or she won't. She won't die if she doesn't get her milk for a day or 2... i'm sure after a few times of rejecting it she'll realize it's either the sippy or not milk and she will take the sippy :-) good luck!!! for baby #3 do it earlier!! I did it at around 10 months and she barely knew what was going on then ;-)
  • I was gonna suggest the Nuby straw sippy's as well. That was the only sippy Carley would take until recently though, so that' what worked for us.

This is what I did with Alexis. I tried at 10 months and she wasn't having it. I waited a month until she was 11 months and that was it, I only gave her a bottle before bedtime. For a day or 2 she was super fussy and barely drank any milk but then she came around after she realized the bottles were only for nighttime and those were gone around 15 months.

  • Ahhh! So I put milk in a straw sippy during dinner last night and EUREKA! she drank it. :) Time to stock up on straw cups!

  • Elise also drinks more from a straw cup than a sippy. But, I give her the first milk feeding in a Nuk sippy.  she had a hard time with other types when she was younger.  But, I have a feeling I'm spoiled with her as far as her eating habits as well.  She loved whole milk and has pretty much transitioned.  She eats ALL kinds of food and wants whatever we are eating.  So, feeding has not really been an issue unless she's teething.  I still give her a bottle before naps and bedtime because I like to, but it's something I plan to wean her of soon, too.  The reason I started with the morning feeding was ti buy us some time while we got ready for work.  It used to take her a long time to drinkfrom her sippy-not anymore, lol.
