Trying to Get Pregnant

Lack of ovulation and period after stopping birth control

I have been on Cryselle for several years. I tried switching to a generic Yaz once, and had nothing but issues. So, once I switched back, things went back to normal. Now I am married, and I am ready to have children. I have been off my birth control since September 9, 2011. I did an at home ovulation kit, and I didn't ovulate this past month. I figured it was a normal thing, but then when I didn't get my period on October 3 as planned, I started to worry. I called my OB/GYN, and she put me on medroxyprogesterone (Provera). It's supposed to make me get my period. I have been on it 5 out of 10 days now. The nurse told me it could take up to two weeks for me to get a period. Has anyone else ever experienced this? I am just getting nervous about a lot of things. Please give me any information you can.

Re: Lack of ovulation and period after stopping birth control

  • you hadn't ovulated YET.   Or you did ovulate (maybe a bit later than you were testing for), and you just missed it on your OPKs.

I did OPKs for 6 months.   5 out of those 6 months I never saw a positive, even though through charting my temps I knew I was ovulating.    OPK's don't work all the time for everyone.

You really didn't give yourself much of a chance this first cycle, did ya?    What if you O'd late, and couldv'e gotten KU, but you jumped the gun with the provera.

  • Yes, I've used provera in the past, but most Dr.s wait 2-3 months before starting this. In my case it was 3 months.

My first period off BCP was 41 days without any assistance. Your body is trying to adjust coming off the BCP; it takes time.

For real... Barely a week "late" and give drugs on the first cycle off BCP... Wow.

I had "short" 27 day cycles pre-BCP but after being on them for 10+ years my cycles were longer.

Had I jumped the gun like that, I would not have known that I was KU... On day 27 AF was nowhere in sight and tests were still negative b/c I was only REALLY like 5DPO. I got a pretty early BFP and that was on CD34 (11DPO) - almost an entire week "late".

  • I'm surprised your doctor would give you that if you've only been off bcp for a month.  My first cycle off bcp was over 50 days.  Over a year later, I still have some longer cycles.  You should start charting your temps and cm, that will greatly help.

  • My first cycle off of BCP was 44 days, the second was 48, and this one is shaping up to be between 50-51.

This was my thought exactly! Did your doctor not rule out pregnancy before they gave you the Provera? That is really scary if they didn't!

i agree with all the above.  Im not an expert by any means, but some people's LH surges are shorter than others. If you are testing with an OPK in the morning and then retesting the next morning, you could have missed your surge which is why you would get a negative. OPKs do not tell you that you have ovulated, it just predicts the days when ovulation COULD occur.  Also, coming off BCP can mess with your cycles.  I had a 32 day cycle, 24 day cycle and a 43 day cycle.  Normally doctors do not prescribe Provera until after 60 days of no period and after pregnancy has been ruled out (either blood test or ultrasounds). Next cycle, give your body time to adjust...  if you hit 60 days with no period, then call your doctor. In the mean time, hump it out, have fun TTC.

I agree with this. I had an ob/gyn appt during a 40-something day cycle (for something unrelated) and my dr gave me a Rx for provera when the cycle length came up. I chose not to take it because of the possibility that I could have gotten pregnant during that cycle. Unfortunately, I wasn't but I would have hated to jump the gun when either we still had a shot or i was already.

  • I've been off BCP for two months now and I'm going to reach the 60 day mark here. I went to the obgyn and they did give me a Rx for Provera. I'm choosing not to take it quite yet but when I went the nurse asked me if I thought I might be preggo... I said no, she asked how I knew... hmm... because almost an woman in her right mind would test, and test, and test before coming to the very real realization that coming off BCP messes with her cycle and she is indeed not pregnant. :(

My decision to go to the obgyn was because yes, we're TTC but we're not concentrating yet on the charting and whatnot. But for my peace of mind, I wanted to make sure everything was in order coming off BCP. I have a family history of IF. I don't want to be a year down the road before finding out I needed to be doing something different.

If it'll help, ask your professional.

  • I'm at day 21 of my cycle and it is the first official one off BC.  According to my CBEFM and OPKs I haven't ovulated yet.  I think it is close since my CM is very heavy (sorry TMI) and very eggwhite, but that would make my cycle around 35 days if my LP is normal.  This is very common with BC.  My last cycle was very short and I had barely any CM at all.  That was likely an anovulatory cycle.  Post-BCP cycles are crazy.

  • I have been TTC since April and just got my first +OPK last month. Thankfully I chart, so I know when I O. I suggest you do the same.

  • I told my doctor that I took three pregnancy tests. One two days before I was supposed to get my period, one the day I was supposed to get my period, and one two days after I was supposed to start. The third test was right before I started the Provera. Now you have me all worried. The pharmicist asked my husband if there was any possibility that I could be pregnant because Provera would cause a miscarriage. Tonight I will take pill seven. I haven't experienced any cramps or anything abnormal. I've noticed I'm a little extra hormonal. I just think that is from the stress. Should I be worried that my doctor put me on Provera so quickly?
