BFing mommies and uneven supply

So, possible TMI, but my left breast is much larger and produces MUCH more milk than does the right.  I can nurse on the left side only, then go pump and get 3-4 oz after nursing and only 1 oz. from the right after not nursing on it.  How can I amp up the supply on my right breast? At some point I have to go out in public....I'm starting to look a little bit ridiculous!

Re: BFing mommies and uneven supply

  • I had the same issue... how far out are your from having your baby? After a few weeks mine seemed to even out more (although the left still produces a little more than the right but its not very physically obvious). Make sure you're BFing evenly, even if you would rather start on the left to relieve pressure. And when you pump, just pump enough to relieve pressure on that side but continue to pump the other side. The more/less you stimulate a particular side, the more/less milk it will make! Good luck!

  • I had this problem, although not quite to this extent.  The LC told me to nurse on the side that produces less first every time for awhile.  That way you're sure it gets completely emptied every time.  She said I could also try pumping on that side after each feeding.  Try to avoid totally emptying the left side.  That way your body won't get those "produce more" signals on that side.

  • I had the same issue with my right producing more. Like the PP said, my LC said to nurse more often on the less productive boob. So, for a couple weeks, I always started DD on the left before moving to the right. If there was way too much pressure on the right, I pumped enough to relieve it. After awhile, it evened out a bit. The right still produces more, but it's not nearly as lopsided as before.

  • Mine are the same, I get 0.5-1.0oz from one side without nursing and 3-4oz from the other side after nursing.  My LO is 12 weeks now and it's still the same, but they don't LOOK any different.  I always nurse LO on the slow side first, then the fast side.

  • I had that same issue while nursing my 8 year old DD. My sister ( a LC ) advised all the same things the PP's have said. Especially the nursing first on the side that produces less. My problem was I had oversupply on both sides so she only ever nursed for 5-10 minutes one side at a time. I thought at first that SHE preferred one side thus making more supply on that side, but eventually realized that it was ME who preferred that one side- because it was more comfortable to hold her with that arm/ side. That's when I realized how important it is to keep track of which side LO last fed from. My sister suggested the rubber band method. Put a scrunchy or rubberband on the side LO last fed from, so you know which to nurse on next. Mine got better but because I realized the problem too late it never fully evened out... and I nursed DD for 2 1/2 years. Oh well- my girls have always been mismatched a bit, so it wasn't a huge issue for me. Good Luck!
