Babies: 6 - 9 Months

7 m/o at wedding?

I am a bridesmaid in a wedding in Nov next year, DH is an usher. LO will be about 7 months by then and is invited to the wedding. We will be traveling about 5 hours for it and will likely be there Fri-Sun. While I know each baby is different, what should I expect/prepare for? DH will be able to take LO back to the hotel if needed if I am in the middle of something and I also have an aunt who is invited to the wedding.

Re: 7 m/o at wedding?

  • My LO was in/at my brother's wedding when he was 5 months old, which is a little different than 7 months old but not much.  In my opinion, it depends on what time the wedding is and your kid's schedule and how he/she likes loud noise.  For us it actually worked out perfectly.

The ceremony was 6ish which sort of clashed with feeding time, so while we were getting pics beforehand DH quickly fed him a bottle - which he almost finished.  He was an angel during the ceremony, had a meltdown during cocktail hour (which no one noticed because it was so loud!), was a perfect angel when we were announced into the reception and then he literally passed out during the band's first song and didn't wake up until halfway through the last song.  Yes, he slept through the entire reception with a crazy loud band playing.  I ended up covering his ears with receiving blankets in an attempt to protect his hearing, but he couldn't have cared less about the noise.  He usually goes to bed around 7PM and that's when the reception started, and he's used to falling asleep with noise since I've put a sound machine on for him every night since he came home from the hospital.

  • One of our best friends got married when DS was 11 weeks old and DH was in the wedding. Our situation was similar to yours - 5 hours away, Fri-Sun, etc.

Because this was our first time ever traveling with a baby, we gave ourselves plenty of time to do everything. I took Thursday off and we got there Thursday night. That allowed us to get plenty of sleep the night before all of the activities started. We also made zero plans for Sunday aside from meeting friends for lunch on our way out of town. DS slept during most of our trip, which was great. When he got tired of his carseat, we pulled over and DH switched to the backseat and kept him entertained (I like to drive when we travel).

Pack lots of snacks for yourself because you may not think about picking up food otherwise, or you might get stuck on the highway for 1.5 hours like we did when it was closed for a crash. I have driven that highway probably 70 times over the last 10 years and had never gotten stuck like that before. We were so glad to have food.

Pack extra diapers and wipes and outfits in case of poop/puke/weather. Extra burp rags. Bring a couple of trash bags and some jugs of water in addition to water bottles to keep yourself hydrated for BFing. We brought our own Pack N Play and sheet because I didn't feel comfortable using the hotel's. Pack a little bit of baby wash in small container and throw it in your suitcase just in case. We washed DS's hair in the sink 10 minutes before we left for the wedding upon realizing that, despite otherwise looking adorable, his hair was gross. Bring your nursing cover if LO is still tolerating it at that point. You may want to bring baby ear protectors if the reception will be indoors. DS got very unhappy very quickly due to the loud music and we spent most of the reception out in the hallway/outside walking around.

If you are still BFing at that point, do your best, if you can, to make your wedding outfit BF-friendly. Easy to access, easy to hide spots if LO dribbles, etc.

By that point you will have a good sense of LO's needs and tolerance to public places and will be able to prepare pretty well. That knowledge of your LO plus having zero expectations of how things will go and just making yourself go with the flow will probably result in a perfectly fine trip. Enjoy!
