Babies: 6 - 9 Months

How young is too young?

My youngest is 9 months, my oldest is 6 years. Is 6 too young to leave in the car while I run in to the gas station? Thanks for your input!

  • Also, as they have clearly labeled me a "newbie", how do I put my new ticker on my posts, as thankfully I'm NOT 79 weeks preggo. haha.

  • I think 6 is way too young to leave alone.  I would say about 12.  Yeah, I'm overprotective.   And preggo is a disgusting word.

  • I think 6 is too young as well.  And i think the word preggo is cute! We have had a few instances where i'm from this year alone, where the mother/father runs into the gas station leaving the car running and the car has been stolen.  They have returned or dropped the children off the side of the road in all instances.  But that is just something i am not willing to risk.

  • Depends on the 6 year-old and the gas station.

I get gas on our Air Force base here. I would be comfortable leaving a 6 year-old while I ran into the store for a second given that I can see almost every parking space from the store and it's a military base which is a fairly controlled environment.

I would not consider leaving a 6 year-old who I couldn't trust to stay in his or her seat though.

  • Did you ask how young is too young to use the word preggo? Why is everyone commenting on that?  Huh?  Let's start a new post about words that annoy the sh!t out of us. I have plenty!

No, I wouldn't leave a 6 year old while I go in the gas station/ store, etc.  I think it would be whatever age you're comfortable leaving the child alone anywhere... i.e. home alone. They need to be old enough and responsible enough to know how to react if something went wrong.  I'm not sure what age that will be- my son is only 6 mos. But i'd assume it depends on the child. I'd say double-digits anyway...

  • You should check your state laws.  Here in TN any child left unattended under age 13 in a motor vehicle = misdemeanor.  No exceptions.

  • I'm sorry, but I don't get why everyone is in such a hurry. I've seen posts about leaving LO in the car to go to the post office, now leaving LO in the car to go inside the gas station. I'm not trying to sound mean... But really, why would it be worth the risk? You save how much time by leaving them in the car?

A person can steal a car in seconds. Who knows how long the line in the gas station or post office will be. I'd rather just bring LO in with me and not take any risks of her facing some situation that she should never be in just because I wanted to save 1 or 2 minutes of time..
