Nurses/Nursing Students

I know we have several nurses here, as well as students.

I am currently in school, almost done with my pre-reqs for nursing school. I plan on applying for an Associates RN program in the summer, or staying in my current college (University of Alabama, Roll Tide!) and applying there in the summer for the Fall for nursing school? I hear that it is very difficult program, and I currently have a 2.5 year old. I know I am perfectly capable of doing whatever I put my mind to, but I wanted opinions on whether or not you thought it would be possible to work part time, be a mom, and go to nursing school? If I have to I will cut out the working part time, but I really would like to have a LITTLE income!!

  • This is off subject but I sent you a message a while back and you never responded. We are labor buddies and wanted to see what you wanted to do. I will resend just in case you missed it.

  • I'm in my 1st yr of nursing school and expected to graduate in May 2013.  Right now LO is due a week after finals so I'm hoping she stays in until then at least.  I plan to go right back to school.  I have all my pre-reqs done so I'm strictly in nursing classes and wouldn't do it any other way.  I'm taking 10 credit hrs/semester plus working 2 part time jobs.  I'm keeping the mindset that it's totally possible but I know I'm going to have a lot of support from MH which will be crucial.  Plus I will still have summer off from school.  It is hard work but I think it's definitely doable.

  • I'm a peds NP and it's been almost 10 years since I finished nursing school, but here's my two cents worth : yes, you *could* do it, however it would be super crazy and you would need some very reliable childcare (on top of a very supportive husband). You would also lose a lot of irreplaceable time with your children .

    Yes.

You could do it but it will be very hard.  I was living at home with my parents and DH (Fiance at the time) was in college long distance over 26 hours away.  I didn't have a lot to deal with and school was still tough.  I did work though school but ended up quitting my last semester so I could concentrate better.

I did the ADN program and we had school in the summer also, so we had no time off.  We had several people in my class quit because it was just too much to deal with, many were people with families.  But then again we had some people make it through just fine.  It's a commitment, but it will be worth it once you are done.

  • I am in NP school online now and graduate in Aug. It is doable and difficult. I agree with the supportive husband comment.

What I bolded above is exactly what I have going on, except that LO is due THE WEEK OF finals. I plan on going back right after LO is born, if I don't I will have to start paying my loans back 6 months after and I wouldn't be able to pick back up until the next year.

I do believe that it would be possible to work, be at school and be a mom....it WILL be tough though! I would love to be able to work, but MH thinks that I should just focus on my school work (and LO when she gets here) Though $$ is tight I am glad that he has put his foot down about me having a job. I'm sure whatever decision that you make will be the right one for you and only you will be able to know if it will work for you. I know I would be even more stressed if I had a job.

  • Thank yall! I think I am leaning toward NOT working. FI will be working night shift and can keep the kiddos during the day, so that would save us daycare and over $1000 a month... Thanks for the insight ladies!
