Since my son was diagnosed with milk/soy/egg/peanut allergy i mainly shop (shopped) at Mrs. Greens because everything is organic and i can find almost everything there that he needs.
Recently after purchasing our groceries and going back to my car with 4 bags (not full) and a $200 bill and i just sat in my car and went though the receipt b/c holly crap- $200 for 4 bag is crazy!
Organic (non Florida) OJ = $9 (it's important to me that it's not from Florida)
Ketchup (made from agave) = $8
Avocado = $3 a piece (and my son eats 1 a day!)
Strawberries = $10
i can keep going, but it's almost embarrassing!
The following week i decided to compare prices (for the first time in my life). I went to WF and found the same exact OJ for $4.50.
I went to Trader Joes and their avocados are $2 a piece and their fruit is super cheap! i couldn't believe how cheap their fruits and veggies were! I've never been a fan of TJ for some reason, until recently.
I went to my local Stop and Shop and found that they carry the same ketchup for $4!!
So it took me an extra hour to shop this past weekend and i spent $120 on 6 bags!
what took me so long???? i almost feel guilty that i have been paying so much for things that are exactly the same but i just need to work a little harder to get to them.
I made a deal with DH.. he works near WF so he will go to WF for OJ and i will go to Mrs. Greens for his almond butter and regular milk/soy free butter and TJ's for fruits and veggies and SS for everything else.
We can save about $400 a month just by knowing what to buy where. AMAZING!
Just wanted to share this because I'm almost ashamed of how I've been spending my hard earned money. I want to cry b/c I'm depriving me self from so much just so i can buy his "expensive" food when all this time i could have saved so much.
Re: food shopping..
Out of curiousity, what's bad about FL orange juice?
ETA: I googled - is it child/immigrant labor?
The reason i don't use Florida Oranges (and Tomatoes) is b/c they use 3 times the pesticides.
I'm not sure how true it is, but i have read it in many different locations and watched a special on CNN about it.
Also, a lady was buying this special OJ and i actually got into a conversation with her (why would she buy this $9 OJ instead of tropicana) and she told me she use to live in FL and a lot of their foods are just not safe..
again, not sure how true this is, but if it makes me sleep better at night -i will avoid it.
Thankfully i found that same $9 organic OJ at whole foods for $4.5!!!
I recently noticed TJ's sells organic OJ from florida. That's fine with me, as long as it's organic. But i'm pretty sure Tropicana is not.
this is the one i buy and it's delicious (with added calcium)
shopping is a pain. I was thrilled when I found out our local mass market grocery store has a huge GF/allergy section.
Have you checked Amazon yet? We now order J's cereal bars, cereal, coconut milk and a few other things from the Suscribe and Save program. I need to log on and look for broth since the holidays are coming up and I've found one organic brand that I like more than others (and it's $$).
