Highchair recs?

We have a fisher price space saver high chair (that attaches to a regular chair) but I'm not loving it and might use it as our seat for the grandparent's house and invest in a better seat.

My main complaints are:

  1. there isn't any kind of height adjustment to the tray, so right now LO seems to struggle because the tray is almost at armpit height and he has to sort of reach up to grab things off the tray (and struggles to see them too).  The seat tilts and so does the tray so we can angle it towards him, but that only helps a little.
  2. it doesn't actually fit under our table (one reason we went with this seat was so that eventually LO could eat at the table with us).
  3. you have to clean the entire tray - it doesn't have one of those lift out inserts
  4. the one-handed operation is not really one-handed.  the tray never goes on easily and usually takes using both hands to get it on right.  it does come off one-handed though.

Do you all have any recs for a new highchair?  I'm thinking I'd like it to have wheels, but that's not a must. It doesn't have to be a space-saver or fit in a small space either.

Also, if anyone wants to sell their highchair I'd be open to buying it, depending on the features above Stick out tongue

TIA!

Re: Highchair recs?

  • We have the Graco Blossom 4-in-1 high chair, and I don't have enough good things to say about it.  It's worth every penny.  Not a single complaint.  Easy to clean, height adjustment, etc.  Although, ours doesn't have a removeable insert (that I know of?!), but it's never difficult to clean.

  • We have two chairs (obviously). The first one is an expensive Peg Perego chair that was a hand-me-down from a friend. It serves it's purpose but is hard to get clean and the removable tray is huge, so it's hard to wash.

The second chair is the Fisher Price Ocean Wonders Health Care High Chair. We love it. The cushion comes off easily and cleans up beautifully in the washer. The tray is big enough for food but not so huge that it takes up the whole sink. It's on wheels, so moves easily. If I had money to burn, I'd get rid of our Peg Perego chair and get another of these FP chairs.

  • We also have the Graco Blossom 4-in-1. I have been super happy with it. It's a bit pricier than other models but since we use it so often, it's been worth it for us. Here's how it measures up to your requirements.

    1. You can't do height adjustment on the tray. However, the tray seems pretty low because I put my 4 month old in the chair and it's not too high for her.

    2. It's height adjustable so it should fit under your table. We actually have our chair up really high so part of the tray goes over our table so it's sort of like she's eating with us. I waited to transition DD to the table for a while because she makes such a mess that it's nice to have all of the mess on the tray.

    3. The pop out plastic tray is wonderful. It stays on well but pops off easily and it's easy to quickly spray off.

    4. I would say that you have to use 2 hands to put the tray on. It's not hard to do but you just sort of need two hands to guide it in and because it's wide. Taking the tray off is 1 handed though.

    The other things I like:
    1. Neutral colors and easy to clean. Mine actually looks pretty much as good as new even after almost 2 years of use. The insert piece that has color on it can be removed and the rest of the chair is off-white which I like.
    2. The wheels are great because sometimes I face the kid into the kitchen while I'm cooking and other times I want to pull it up to the table.
    3. The reclining position is nice for when they are drinking a bottle and can hold it themselves.
    4. There is a 5 point harness that converts to a 3 point. This is great for the younger kids (although your son may not need it as much).

If you want to see a video on it, there's one here.

  • We have the Blossom too! We love it, it was definitely worth the money.
  • I do not like our chicco. Others may like it, but I find it a pain to clean, the tray height is terrible, and did I mention its a pain to clean.
  • Thanks for the recs ladies - I think I might have to convince DH a little Wink

One question on the Graco Blossom, it looks like there are multiple components....what do you do with the other pieces when not in use? I'm assuming store them somewhere?  and for those of you with two kids, do you see yourself using the high-chair and booster simultaneously (as advertised)?

We stored the booster in our basement. When DD#1 was still a baby, we used it a few times when we had people over for dinner who had a toddler. Once DD#1 got bigger, I let her use the booster for a while but she prefered to just sit in a regular chair. So, now the booster is back in the basement again.

  • I would seriously consider not buying another highchair and just go to a booster seat. Can your LO sit up yet? We switched from our high chair to the Fisher Price Healthy Care booster seat a few months ago, and I like it so much better. It's easy to use, easy to clean, and very portable (so we can take it to restaurants or other people's houses). It comes with a tray that you can use, and when LO gets older, you can remove the tray and have him eat at the table with everyone else.

And most importantly, it only costs around $30.

Yeah, at this point, I would really just stick it out, to be honest. We have the space saver and though I agree that cleaning the tray can be PITA, we love it otherwise. Because it's the same height as our chairs and fits so close to the table, C is still in it without complaint (which is great because even though the tray is a pain, it's still easier to clean that than a table cloth every day!). I have friends that use it as a booster now and like it, too.
