I'm thinking of getting one for DS for Christmas, but I really don't know what I should be looking for. What kind do you have? Do any come with the tracks? Are they compatible with different brands of trains & cars? Any other tips or advice???
TIA!

We got ours second hand but it is Imaginarium. I know last year on Black Friday Toys R Us had a buy a train table get a free basic train set. Most of the wodden ones work together, DS has a bunch of kinds. I like the table, wish the drawers were bigger (personally) but otherwise like it.
We don't have any trains to go with it yet, but we have a pottery barn train table that we picked up at a garage sale last year. We totally love the table - very sturdy with great large drawers :-)
We have the Thomas train table from Toys R Us and we love it. Lucas is Thomas obsessed though.
The playboard has two sides. One side has tracks built into it which is great. Then you can flip them over and it's a flat side where you can build train tracks on it with any track you want. The drawer is pretty big and stores all of his trains in it.

Most of the tracks are wooden and will be compatible, but there are some lines like chuggington and dinosaur train that are plastic and don't work. The trains also don't fit on the wooden tracks well either.
But Thomas, melissa and doug and brio all work together. Currently, my kiddo LOVES to build tracks that cover the entire length of the floor in the playroom out into the hall towards the front door! So I wouldn't say a train table is _needed_ but it's nice. H still builds on it and uses it for other projects too. This is a reason to not get something with perma tracks installed, then the table b/c a single use item.

Costco has one right now that is pretty nice.
