Georgia Babies

Why am I having this problem?

I have loved shopping for little girls my whole life.  Now that I have one, I can't find anything that I like.  Or maybe its the price tags that are killing me?  I mean, I can't justify spending $40 on a dress or even $20 if I'm also going to have to buy tight or leggings and stuff too.  With Gavin, I was able to dress him from the clearance racks almost exclusively.  Gymbo, Crazy8, Gap, Children's Place, whatever... and he always just wore Carters outlet stuff to daycare.  I knew I could walk back to the clearance rack in any store and put together an outfit for him w/ minimal effort and without breaking the bank.  But it seems like the girls clearance racks are messier and they might have one piece in her size but nothing to coordinate.  And I don't have time to go from store to store piecing outfits together.  I'm becoming super frustrated and tired of putting her in the same old outfits over and over again.  Where do you buy cute girls clothes that's also affordable?  Is there a particular store where you stock up on basics?  Please fill me in?

Re: Why am I having this problem?

  • I've had good luck at JC Penny or Khol's for Cadence. I also did a lot of consignment sale shopping for her. The selection is best for best at those sales for baby girls IMO.

  • I swear by consignment for Aerin. I've gotten so many cute dresses at Sweet Repeats in Buckhead.

  • Consignment lately. But when she was younger, I'd get most of her stuff off the Clearance Racks at GAP and Gymboree and Crazy 8. That's harder to do now that she's in 2T/3T because its much more picked through. BRU also has some cute baby girl stuff for relatively in expensive.

  • For day to day basics Kohls is great.  I buy easy to wear and wash knit pants and tops that I don't care if she gets paint or marker on if she's having some fun, and they match.  Not super fashionable, but they work.  Then I can splurge on "outfits" elsewhere. (Although I sew most of DD's fancy dresses myself)

  • I bought Harlie a bunch of stuff at a consignment sale last month--and then I fill in most other stuff on ebay--I just have a saved search for items in her size that are "EUC" excellent used condition.  Most of the stuff is like new and the lower prices enable me to buy her nicer brands and more stuff.  I bought her a Hanna Andersson dress for $8 the other day and it looks brand new.
  • The Childrens Place is very affordable, IMO.  Almost all of Mia's basics come from Old Navy, though.  I just wait until I get a sale email and then stock up for current and next size up.  They usually are $4-6 a piece.

I honestly hate shopping in-store because, like you said, it's messy and I'm always missing the good priced stuff.

  • I end up buying a lot of basics from Gap and Gymboree for Rowan, but I refuse to shop anything but sales there.  I also usually shop a season or two in advance if I can and just estimate her size.   I stay on their email and mailing lists (enduring the never-ending spam) just so I can get a heads-up about sales.

With Gap the kid sales aren't always advertised, but they usually align with the adult sales.  For example, whenever they run sales on jeans at Gap, they're almost always on sale at Baby Gap.

With Gymbo, I usually end up shopping online because the selection (and the prices) are better during their sales.  I almost always pair it with a 20-30% off coupon too.

For Rowan's dressy stuff, I usually shop on Zulilly, Janie & Jack (their big sales almost always align with Gymbo) , or I make it.

  • Glad you asked, because I have been struggling with Lauren's clothes as well.  I just don't have a good grip on where I can go to get a bunch of stuff I like for her quickly.  When the boys were younger, I shopped at Gymboree all the time and was pretty happy with it, but I rarely find anything I like for any of the kids there anymore.  I do buy some stuff for Lauren on the FB sites, Zulily, etc, but for more of the everyday stuff I am struggling.  Our Old Navy has a pitiful baby girl section.  I just wish I could find a store where I consistently find a lot that I like.  I used to LOVE our Baby Gap outlet store, but they combined it with the adult store and now the selection is much smaller, so I can't rely on that anymore.

  • Oh, the Baby Gap at both West Cobb Avenues and East Cobb Avenues have really good clearance sections...or at least they used to. TC Gap sucks now that they combined everything.

  • +1 on Baby Gap West Cobb.  I typically go whenever Mom is watching the kids bc she lives out that way and can keep the kids while I shop.
  • Also, I have found that Gap and Janie and Jack have the best tights.  They last forever.

Target is great for leggings and basic pants.  I'm always on the hunt for cute tops in solid colors.  I've scored some really cute ones from the Target clearance rack.  When I find a plain shirt that I like, I buy it in 3 different sizes.  Believe it or not, it's so hard to find a cute cream or white t-shirt.

  • I am shopping way too much for dd. Way.Too.Much.

BabyGap has great sales. Janie and Jack does too, Nordstrom has cute stuff and it does go on sale, MiniBoden, Next Direct (a UK site that delivers to the US in 2 days for $5 and has the cutest clothes), Target, even Costco sometimes.

I know Marshalls and TJ Maxx and Nordstrom Rack have good stuff but I hate shopping in stores like that where I have to dig.

  • And a warning too....

I don't know what stage your DD is at, but skirts and dresses did not work great when my DD was crawling. She would keep getting caught on them, and would get frustrated. We had to hold off on dresses and skirts until she walking when means she kind of skipped a whole size of dresses and skirts.

  • I love Kohls for daycare basics. The Jumping Bean stuff cleans and holds up well. They normally have some cute and less "busy" tops. It is also easy for my husband to make outfits in the morning since it all matches.

I like Old Navy for everyday jeans and stuff, BUT their sizes are all over the map. I just got 2 pairs of jeans in 2T and they are drastically different in length. Annoying.

Ditto this.  I didn't find dresses convenient at all until they started walking well.

I get most of DDs clothes at consignment stores or sales.  When I do buy something new for a special occasion or pictures, I generally do Old Navy or Children's Place and order online.

Guz- I was at the East Cobb Avenue the other day and it looked like baby gap was gone.   Is it moved inside the adult Gap?  Seems like so much there has closed.

Wow... GTLawGirl this is exactly how I shop.  My mouth is still hanging from how on T u r with my shopping habits for DD.

How funny, especially regarding Zulily and Janie and Jack.  I also use Tea Collection and Pumpkin Patch for unique items and Gilt and HauteLook for dressy stuff.  DD is 18mts and I already have stuff for 4T.  I started when I was preggo.  She has been true to size. :)

Hm...they may have combined them like all the others because they used to be in the back of Gap Kids and have its own room. I haven't been there in a few months.

Yes, its in the back of Gap Kids.  I was there yesterday.  Not much selection tho- IMO.  We did get some cute stuff for Gavin though.
