Patagonia "baby down sweater" (jacket)

I just bought one of these for my LO, as it seemed like something that made sense (thinner yet warmer jacket that we can use in fall or winter). But, prior to cutting the tags off, I want to see if others have used these and if they truly keep LO warm through the winter? What I liked about it, was that it is thin enough to work for the car seat. The sales people assured me that many parents use these through the winter, but the jacket is just so thin looking! Any input from people who have used them, much appreciated.

Not sure if it is the same jacket but we used a Patagonia fleece all last winter. She was always warm and it was perfect for the car. We did have a warmer coat if we were outside more.

We used a cheap one from Children's Place for LO last winter, it was definitely warm. I want to get him a Patagonia or North Face one this year but I'm afraid it won't wash well. Mine doesn't.
