How does your garden grow?

Anyone else keep a garden? I know it's getting towards the end of the growing season, but...

How big is your garden?

Where do you keep it?

What are you growing?

Any great failures or grand successes?

BONUS: Any good tips?

Re: How does your garden grow?

  • How big is your garden? 5 or 6 cinder blocks by 3 cinder blocks I think.

Where do you keep it? Backyard near the house. (When DH first created it he put it in the middle of the yard and was half-way done pulling out the grass when I came home and saw it. I just don't understand why he thought breaking up our huge beautiful backyard with a garden in the middle was the right thing to do. The next year our septic tank had to be completely replaced and the entire yard was torn up. So at that point I redirected the garden closer to the edge of the house.)

What are you growing? We had a fantastic lettuce crop for months! Also had peas do well this year. We've got a variety of squashes, a couple of potato bins, tomatos, and herbs.

Any great failures or grand successes? Most of the tomatos are still green. But our lettuce was amazing this year - it came early and was around for months of salads before we finally took it out.

BONUS: Any good tips? No, DH is in charge of the garden. I wanted to get more involved, but I hate the spiders!

  • My garden is a 1/2 wine barrel on our front patio, plus a few random strawberry plants. I have a cherry tomato plant in the wine barrel (Sweet 100s) plus a few jalapeno pepper plants and a banana pepper plant. The strawberries were initially devoured by the snails, but the last few months we've been able to harvest a few. The tomatoes have been doing great for the last month. They just keep coming!

Next year we're hoping to dig up a camelia bush, and put in a raised bed garden. And next year my strawberries are going in a container so I can keep the snails away. This is my second year with Sweet 100s and they really grow amazingly well without any work on my part.

  • How big is your garden
We have a raised bed that is ~4x10', plus some planters, blueberries, an apple tree, raspberries, a small herb garden and pumpkins, all outside the bed.

    Where do you keep it?
The bed is at the north end of the property, and next to it is the raspberries, apples and herbs.  Blueberries in the front yard, pumpkins along the house on the side.

    What are you growing?
    See above

Any great failures or grand successes?
Soooo many tomatoes and potatoes.  Lots of apples, too, but they aren't ready yet.  Last year was amazing for pumpkins in our garden (one was 37lb!), but we only had one teeny one this year.

    BONUS: Any good tips?
Compost!  And if you're going to build a new bed (or whatever), do it in the winter, so it doesn't delay planing in the spring (or maybe y'all aren't all procrastinators like me...).

  • h finally built my garden after 2 years of nagging. it's about 4'x2'. i'm really excited to start growing stuff, but right now it's just fill dirt. early next year (when i have an infant!) i will put better soil, compost, etc and start growing! i will mostly be growing chinese vegetables.....i have no idea the english names of them. it's at the front of our house, between our driveway and the neighbors driveway.

  • We have one side of our garden in the back as Mason's garden. Every spring he and my Mom plant stuff, and he waters and helps her take care of it.  He loves it.  This year they have 3 pumpkins, strawberries, blueberries, snap peas, and some flowers.

  • How big is your garden? 6' x 8' raised bed

Where do you keep it? in the back yard

What are you growing? Tons of tomatoes, blueberries spaghetti squash, pumpkins zuchini, basil, parsley, carrots, grn onions, and lettuce

Any great failures or grand successes? My zucchini was very sad this year - only one on 3 plants! I have tons of tomatoes but most are still green and i'm babying one big spaghetti squash. We have 4 little pumpkins that will be harvested soon. And we had two gigantic sunflowers that J loved.

BONUS: Any good tips?Compost, compost, compost!

Just for fun, here's our sunflowers!

  • I moved everything to containers this year so I could move them around the deck for best sun light.

I tried but failed: Hydrenga's, wild flowers, strawberries

    I succeeded: Beans, peas, lettuce.

I have pots of herbs that are doing great still.

Next year I want to do container around the edges of a new patio I want to put in, in the back yard.  Walter LOVEd the garden but I had motivation problems tending to it.

I am also going to try to do flowers this year.  I planted bulbs for the spring and hope that will kick start my new found love of gardening, when I see how pretty they are.

  • Do you mean my untamed jungle of weeds?  It grows fast, wild and unchecked.  We're not so much with the gardening in this house.  I wish we were, but our thumbs are brown.

Also... I'm clearly 12, because I opened this post half expecting it to be about grooming of the lady parts.  Stick out tongue

To keep your plants from being devoured by snails put copper wire/ribbon or thin tubing around the plants.  The sails won't cross the copper because it causes a chemical reaction in thier "slime" similar to an electrical shock.  My mom's calla lillies were a favorte among the snails until my dad put copper tubing around the edge of the flower bed.  No more eaten up plants.

I have a flower bed in the front yard full of rhodies, tulips and a ton of strawberries that take over almost the whole bed.  I don't do much other than weed and water and I get huge crops of berries.  My back yard flower bed has a couple of rhodies and some rose bushes (that need to be moved because they don't get enough sun).  Next spring I hope to plant some pumpkins in the sunny patch of the bed so I have my own for Halloween.  I'm also hoping to plant a couple of hydrangeas (my favorite!) and some ground cover, probably periwinkle, and some ferns among the trees in the back.

  • How big is your garden? 22'x25'

Where do you keep it? It is fenced in on the south side of the property

What are you growing? Tomatoes, cucumber, zucchini, acorn squash, parsley, gypsy bell peppers, strawberry, we also have sage,a plum tree, blueberries, salmon berries and gooseberries. I am going to try to do garlic and kale too.

Any great failures or grand successes? My tomatoes did pretty well this year... it was only my 2nd year with a garden.

BONUS: Any good tips? I found that buying starts and keeping them covered under plastic sheeting while in the garden until it turns 75 really helped. Also carefully choosing things that typically germinate in 55-70 days is the way to go.

  • How big is your garden? 4x6 raised bed

Where do you keep it? back yard in the most sunlight

What are you growing? This year we had crazy amounts of lettuce. I also tried green onions (fail), chives (success), three kinds of basile (one fail, two successes), parsley (so-so), cilantro (holy hell it took over!), spinach (success) and rosemary (fail). My thought was I'll just buy what I like and toss it in and see what works.

Any great failures or grand successes? Lettuce and Cilantro = grand success. Crowding the plants...fail.

BONUS: Any good tips? When they say don't crowd, don't crowd. :) Or just cut them back every other day. Also, if your landlord cleans the roof, don't trust them to cover the garden. We had to rip it out because they brushed a ton of roof grit and freshly killed moss in it. Boo.
