Re: Are people really this dumb?

  • My friend who is a pediatrician told me it really doesn't matter the amount you drink, but how your body metabolizes the alcohol...so there are women who could binge drink their entire pregnancy without having a child with FAS, while other women could have one drink at just the right (or I guess wrong) time and metabolize it in such a way that it could cause FAS.  That's enough for me to stay away from it, even though watching Justin drink a beer makes me really thirsty for a beer...

ETA: I also feel like that girl thinks a Corona Light = less alcohol.  And I would rather take my chances with cold deli meat before drinking alcohol...

ETA2: Melissa, I LOVE your grammar badge.

  • I actually kinda feel bad for her...I really think it's her first and she's just naive and took bad advice. Granted it's common sense. Just hope she doesn't take anymore bad advice.

  • You don't get a pass for that because it's your first. No drinking during pregnancy is common sense. And if it's not there's always that handy dandy "A pregnant woman never drinks alone" sign in the bathroom of EVERY bar. I'm not quite sure what there is to feel bad about on HER end... That baby on the other hand...

  • I agree with you 100%. I realize how I worded it it may come off as defending her...but please please don't think that cause I think she was being very selfish and not thinking about her LO at all.I just ment that if she's naive enough to take advice like that and believe it then I really feel bad for her (i feel bad shes that dumb) She's is going to have a very very long road ahead of her if she believes any advice given to her without second thought...and for the sake of her LO I hope she realizes not everything everyone says is fact.

  • About half of the women on my BMB have stated that their OB/MW say that it's okay to have the occasional beer/glass of wine. She had ONE beer not a bottle of vodka I hardly think that warrants calling her out across boards.

  • So, don't have a beer.

There are plenty of doctors who state that light drinking (one beer or glass of wine on rare occassions) are fine throughout pregnancy - though many will say after first tri.  America is the ONLY English-speaking country to adopt this particular attitude in relation to alcohol consumption, the idea that no study has ever proven it safe in any amount.  Well of course no study has - it is entirely unethical to do such a study.

Human history is a pretty good indicator that alcohol could be consumed in some quantity without serious damage, as that was the only thing consumed in many countries, and with every meal, because water was potentially unsafe.

It is perfectly fine for you to avoid risks, and I personally don't consume any alcohol during first tri (if I consume any, it's not like I'm a big drinker or anything), but it does not make someone else stupid to choose differently than you.

I agree. While binge drinking obviously is not good, if drinking in moderation was bad, humans would've figured it out a long time ago.

I think it's a personal decision whether you feel comfortable drinking during pregnancy or not. I was told by my OB that it was fine after the first trimester, and now that I'm in the third trimester, I don't feel bad at all for enjoying the occasional glass of wine or beer. Obviously there is never going to be a consensus over whether drinking during pregnancy is fine, but I don't think it's necessary to call people dumb before they do it. I made a decision based on my own comfort level and the advice of my OB. There are many pregnancy and parenting decisions that we will all never agree on.

And lauralew, light beer does in fact equal less alcohol. The only way that you can make beer have 55 calories is by watering it down and having a lower alcohol content. Alcohol is caloric. You cannot decrease the calories without decreasing the alcohol. A 12 oz serving with water and 5% alcohol (a standard non-light beer strength) would be almost 100 calories-that includes no sugars, which are the primary source of flavor in beer. It is impossible to make a beer with less than 100 calories that is not also lower in alcohol content. (DH and I brew our own beer, so I know a fair amount about the process).

  • I keep typing a response and it makes me feel like I'm one of those people I hate. Yes, I agree everything in moderation, normally is OK, but what is the point of one beer? One beer does nothing and it just isn't worth the risk.

I'm not sure what you mean?  I almost only ever drink one beer.  I don't drink for a buzz, I drink for flavor.  I buy high-end craft brews and imports, try to scout out independent local brewers and sample.  So that's my norm.  And I mostly drink in summer (with an occasional glass of bubbly at the holidays), when weather for beer is best.

  • Drinking is not something I plan on doing at all.  I feel having lost one child is enough and the risk just isn't worth it.  IMO this is most likely a group of FTMs being pregnant for the first time.  GL to all of them, and I hope their babies turn out just fine.

No I just don't see how it's all that ridiculous when many doctors say that it is okay.

Because it just doesn't seem worth the risk. And where does one draw the line? Plus how klassy does that look knocking back a beer with a huge pregnant belly....
