Preemie Moms - question about solids

We went to a nutrition appt on Friday for LO (hospital recommended it since we was 6 weeks early). The nutritionist said she wouldn't recommend starting solids until 5-6 months corrected age. Now, I'm not sure she said this because he's a preemie or because of his milk/soy protein allergy. We have our official 4 month appt and shots on Thursday and I plan to follow up with the pedi to ask. I'm in no rush to start solids since LO doesn't really seem interested in our food yet and can't sit very well unassisted, however I hadn't planned on waiting another 3-4 months either. What are your pedis telling you about starting solids for your preemies?

Re: Preemie Moms - question about solids

  • Interesting. I havent talked with my pedi yet regarding solids and our next appt. is not until DS is 5 months. I wonder why the nutritionist rec using adj age to start. Im curious to see what your pedi says. I was going to wait to start solids when lo showed interest and could sit up well on his own. Sorry i have no advice.

  • Our Pedi told us at their 4 month that it was perfectly fine to go ahead & start solids. There was no mention about them being able to sit up or not, just to start them on cereal a few times a week & work up to once a day. She also said that since they seem to be hitting milestones on track, that they no longer have an adjusted age. They weighed 14lb3oz @28th percentile & 13lb15.5oz @24th percentile.

  • We're going with 6 months (actual) because of the MSPI. We're going to try switching down to Alimentum a couple weeks before his 6 month appointment so I think the pedi especially wanted him to wait so we're not irritating his digestive tract by giving him solids and a less hypoallergenic formula. Ev's caught up to where he should be on size and milestones though, plus he was barely a preemie (36 weeks), so I'm not sure how those things would have affected the timing otherwise.

hruhlman: Are you guys on Neocate right now? We've been on Nutramigen (6 weeks) and now Alimentum (6 weeks) and I was going to ask the pedi about moving to soy this week actually.

  • Mine didn't say anything about her being a preemie and starting solids later than normal. She was 4 weeks early but you'd never be able to tell anymore.

This exactly.  LO weight it pretty much on track for his age now and so is his general development.  We were told by our pedi to start solids but I have not as yet.

  • Our dr. told us to wait longer, too. I am in no hurry to start solids, so I'm glad we can wait a while. DD is still very small (not quite 10 lbs.) and I can't imagine trying to get her to eat solids.

Sorry, just saw this response! We are on Neocate now, Ev's been on it since about 7 1/2 weeks. Our pedi said that generally she just keeps them on a milk/soy free formula until a year but since Neocate is so ridiculously expensive and our insurance won't cover it she said we should try switching back down to the Alimentum a couple weeks before his 6 month check-up, that way he has time to adjust and we'll have time to notice any reactions before the appointment. I wish we could switch down to soy, even the Alimentum is expensive and it smells so awful, but our pedi made it seem like it was safer to just stay milk/soy free for the whole first year. I'm not looking forward to going back to it!

  • Our Pedi treats LO like a regular 5 month old even though she was over a month premature. He didn't say anything about not starting solids until she gets to her "right" age.

Perhaps it is because she came out 100% healthy- no problems and no NICU time? I'm not sure...I'm waiting until 6 mo regardless though.

This.  M was just over 4 weeks early, and the pedi said we could start cereal at her 4 month appt... actually she recommended we start cereal to "help her sttn."  Confused  We aren't planning to start until 6 months (actual age) though.

Sorry, just saw this today.  They were born at 36 weeks which is normal for twins, but they were both on the small end. One of them had IUGR and was born @ 4lbs. 4oz with NICU time as a grower and feeder only. The other was 5lb. 4 oz. with no NICU time. They were both on Neosure till 2 months and then taken down to the regular similac.
