Babies on the Brain

Unsure about my Pedi's advice

So I finally called because Kai has been super fussy since mid week.  I assume it is teething, but he is also acting super weird about eating (on leftie especially.)  So I was wondering if maybe it isn't teeth, but either reflux or ears.

Anyways they said to see how he does through the weekend, call back on Monday, upped his Zantac dose since he has put on a bit of weight, etc.  But she said I should give him Tylenol to help with whatever pain he might be having and use orajel if he isn't sleeping good at night.

Isn't Orajel bad?  Should I really medicate him every night since he has been sleeping so badly lately because can't teething last quite some time?

Well that is a catch22.  Like you, I hate to medicate a kid unnecessarily, but teething does last quite some time and if they can't sleep well, they can't heal and manage the pain during the day.  Supposedly there is a new orajel out that is free of all the nasty dyes and other such garbage, but I haven't personally seen it.  I would stick to Hyland's gel.  If you're giving pain relievers at night, we have found infant advil to be the most effective and longest lasting--there is a dye/alcohol free version.  I hate to give meds every night, too, but sometimes it's the only way they can rest.

Ohhh I didn't know there was a Hyland's gel.  I have just seen the teething tablets and those are no nos right?  I have too good a memory and remember all this stuff from hanging around here, but never paid that close attention.  Now that I have my own kid it is like these little warning signs go off that those are bad.

They can't have Advil till 6 months right?

Ditto all this. But I might just try giving the tylenol and if that doesn't help, then try the orajel. It did very little for DS when he was teething. But he's still too little for Advil :/

  • We are just starting to deal with teething (I wasn't ready for it to come so soon!). We're using Hyland's gel and acetaminophen. I would say you don't need to use it every night, but if he's fussy, go ahead and try it. If it ends up being every night, then that's what he needs. You could also try teething toys, cold of some sort (frozen toys, frozen breast milk in a mesh feeder, a chilled wash cloth) before jumping to the medicine. I really don't think one dose before bed every night will be a big deal, but that's just my opinion. If it doesn't feel right to you, check out other pain remedies. Lots of people swear by those amber necklaces, too.

  • We opted not to use orajel after reading about safety issues online. Esp for kids under two years of age.

We do give him generic infant Tylenol.  Mainly at night. We can see two teeth coming in right now, and he's extra drooly and a bit more fussy.  He's also chomping on his spit rag.

He doesn't like traditional teethers.  He prefers to chew on cloth.

ETA: E doesn't care for his amber necklace.  I tried it again a few days ago, and he actually started crying.

  • No advil, he's too young.

Why not give him Tylenol for two or three nights in a row to allow him to get a few nights of really good REM sleep. Then, depending on how he is, you can give Tylenol as needed.

Yeah that is pretty much what I decided to do after going back and forth all day.  He actually has bags under his eyes from all the crappy sleep lately.  I figure a dose before bed and then if he wakes up middle of the night (and it has been at least four hours) another dose.  Hopefully he is more comfy and gets more sleep.

He sleeps like crap in his crib anyways, but he has always slept good (except during growth spurts) in his swing.  Like he will sttn if that swing is moving.  The last half week he literally is waking up 3-6 times a night even with the swing moving.

Yep.  I would like him to learn to talk and tell me if I need to make a pedi appt.  This guessing crap sucks.

  • Yup, it's hard when they can't tell you what's wrong.

Riley puked twice yesterday, but seems fine. I wish he could tell me if it's because he hurts, he's ill, or he just ate too much grass.

My pup was puking, but I had recently changed her diet.  We went back to her old food, and she was much better.

If that was my dog, I would go with too much crap that I am not supposed to get into being consumed which in turn makes me eat grass to try to ease my horrible stomach pains which in turn causes me to puke which then wants to make me eat more trash.  She actually digs under our fence to get to our neighbors trash.
