3rd Trimester

Worried I am gaining too much weight

Before getting pregnant I weighed about 140. Last night when I was at a friend's house I stepped on their scale and I weighed 175! Now I am worried that I have gained too much weight. My doctor hasn't said anything but all the sites I read say you should only gain 25 to 30. I am at 35 with 12 weeks to go! I have placenta previa and the doctor said no lifting or exercising. I would go for short walks, but I am also dealing with swelling and water retention and my feet will start to hurt really bad. I know that when I got the 140 weight, it was taken on my scale (which is now broken) and done in the morning not wearing clothes. The other one was at about 10 p.m., fully clothed after having several glasses of water and a big dinner.

I am going to ask my doctor about this tomorrow, but does anyone have any insight to this? If I am gaining too much weight what can I do to slow the gain down and will it hurt the baby?

  • Only your doctor can really tell you if he/she thinks you are gaining too much weight - every woman is different. I wouldn't worry about it if your doctor hasn't said anything to you. If you are swelling a lot, that will certainly add a few pounds. I wouldn't worry about it mama, just make (mostly ;) ) good eating choices and I am sure you will be just fine.

  • Doctors can give you a number to stay around, but every woman's body and baby needs are different! I gained 42lbs with DD, and didn't feel bad about it at all. This time around, I will be 33 weeks on Wednesday and I have gained 17lbs so far. A friend of mine had her daughter in July and she gained 65lbs. Your body will gain what it needs, regardless of what you try to do.

Weight gain also starts to slow down in the last 8 weeks or so.

  • I am 5'4 and weighed around 120 before I was pregnant now I am at 167 and I am literally all belly and my DR says I am fine, I am 39 weeks tomorrow. Every woman is different but if your doc says your ok then you should be fine. My mom gained 65 with my sister and is the same size as me and she lost 20 pounds of water weight right after delivering. HTH

  • I wouldn't worry about it since you said you're swelling and dealing with water retention.  A lot of it is probably water weight, it's not like you're packing on extra pounds of fat or anything.  Don't try to slow your gain or lose weight, your baby still has a lot of really important growth and development to do.  You'll lose the extra fluid weight easily and it's not going to hurt the baby.

  • If it makes you feel better, 28 weeks is when I stopped gaining weight. I had probably gained close to 35 pounds at that point, and since then the scale has just stopped moving. As the baby gets bigger and crowds your stomach, you won't be able to eat as much; at least that's what I'm attributing my stop in weight gain too. Everyone gains at different times and rates, and it doesn't seem like your gain is that out there, so I'm guessing you're fine.

  • I would just ask your doctor.

  • I was diagnosed with GD at 28 weeks and am now 36 weeks and haven't gained a pound since.  I cut out sugar and carbs.  I'm sure if you cut some carbs out (even though, I know it's hard), you could probably keep it more under control.  Just a helpful suggestion.

  • Try not to stress too much.  I gained 50lbs with DD.  30lbs came off in 1 week.  I had TONS of fluid retention.  Also, if your dr is not worried, I wouldn't worry.

  • I agree with PP.  If your doctor hasn't said anything regarding your weight gain, then you shouldn't worry about it.  Obviously, when you see your OB, you can ask what their thoughts are on your weight to ease your mind.
  • Tell me about it.  I have tried to have a good attitude about the weight gain, but looking in the mirror today...I'm a cow!  It's not even just the belly, my thighs are huge!!  Part of me is really glad my husband is away for military training right now so he doesnt have to see me like this!  I am 35 weeks and have gained...about 35 pounds.  I have tried cutting back on carbs which has helped, but I've still got 5 weeks and I'm just praying that it comes off FAST.  I don't want to be going into holidays not just trying to maintain my weight, but lose like 50 pounds.  I'm just discouraged by the whole thing.  Makes me want to never have anymore kids (this is our first), but everyone tells me I'll change my mind.  I hope so, cause right now I feel sick and tired of pregnancy and fatness!
  • Don't worry bout it ur gona gain wat ur gona gain regardless~ as long as the baby is healthy ~ then u have nothing to worry about
