I picked some up today at Walmart at the suggestion of an employee who said they helped when she had her hip replaced. I put two on (they're small) this evening and it seems to be helping with my lower back pain which has been horrible all day. The active ingredients are Campor, Menthol, and Methyl Salicylate (all topical analgesics).
The only side effect from them so far is that I smell like a mixture of pepermint and menthol thus making me smell like an old lady.
They're about $5 for a pack of 40 patches at Walmart. I was told that Costco also carries them for about $8-10 for a pack of 80.
Re: Anyone tried the Salonpas pain patch?
Every time I see the commercial, I laugh because it's a Japanese product that was used alot in the Asian communities. It's just weird to see it used in the American market...
Anyway, I've been using them since I was a little kid (my mom has this thing about pain medication) and they always have seemed to work for me. They smell VERY strong, but at least it isn't an unpleasant smell or messy like BenGay.
I would definitely recommend them to other people, they work great and since you're pregnant and if you're anything like me, Tylenol does nothing.
Salonpas have great products and the company has been around for a LONG time...
Tylenol does nothing on me. I have a very high drug tolerance due to my chroinc pain condition so I usually only get relief from narcotic pain meds which my dr's don't really want to give me while I'm pg. I have a feeling that I'll be buying several more boxes of these patches before my baby arrives.
I noticed that the Salonpas is a Japanese product. The box says the company was founded in 1847 and the product was introduced in 1934, launching in the US in 1987.
I've been to Japan twice and absolutely love it. If hubby ever gets the chance to transfer there for work we're going! I'm annoyed that I can't get my favorite Japanese snacks and beverages here in the US. I've been craving an Aquarius sport drink for months!
Salonpas' website says to consult a doctor during the first 6 months of pregnancy and not to use them in the last 3 months of pregnancy due to the complications they may cause.

When I think of Salonpas, I think of Japanese old ladies and men. When I lived in Japan, I sprained my ankle and used them all day. I really don't think they do much though. And as Jessiree posted it says not to use them during pregnancy. You aren't missing out on much.
And to the previous PP who said she misses Japanese snacks, I totally agree. I'm lucky that I live somewhere with a large Japanese community so I can buy many of them, but not everything I want. But I have to gag at the Aquarius! I hate both Aquarius and Pocari Sweat after being sick with the flu in Japan. I can't stand that stuff!
