Are you buying a nursery bedding set?

We did with DD and we NEVER used the comforter, bumper or dust ruffle... so we basically bought a $200 fitted sheet.  I ended up hanging the comforter on the wall, but even when she is in a big girl bed, we will just put her in a double bed and forego the toddler bed transition so it won't get used then either.  I am thinking this time around I am going to buy the wall art and what not and forget about the overpriced and seemingly useless crib bedding set.  What are you doing?

  • I'm registering for one but I dont think I'll buy a set if we don't get it as a gift.

  • Same here - DS coslept so it was a complete waste and I don't even like the crib bedding anymore, so we are getting just some sheets that compliment his bedding since DS and the baby will share a room.  We are getting them from PBK and only buying the sheets - I have a crib size blanket for when the baby is big enough to sleep with one, and it's red which will match the bedding I'm getting so all I need to buy is the sheets.  And even that won't be used until he is at least a year old probably.  We aren't getting a dust ruffle either because it seems to just attract dog hair.  We might buy a breathable bumper from PBK too, I hated the one I had for DS and we never even used it so that might wait until we need it before I buy it.

  • No. I am just getting some fitted sheets and the dust ruffle I wanted. Will also separately get a rug that comes from a set.
  • I'm not buying or registering for one.  I looked at them, but never found one I absolutely loved, so I'm just buying individual sheets (since I want to have more than one anyway) and having my aunt sew a blanket in a pricey fabric that I absolutely love.  That way I still have something cute to go with them nursery theme and I will be spending about $35 for two organic crib sheets and $50 for supplies for the blanket, so I will still feel like I have permission to buy a few more accessories for the price of the bedding set.

  • Nope... biggest waste from the first time around. I'm getting some sheets, a valance and misc. room decor (changing pad, lamp, wall hanging, frames, etc.). Maybe a rug if I'm feeling inspired. :)

I'm also hoping the person who made a beautiful quilt for DS in the colors of his room will make one for this baby, too.

  • I bought individual pieces(bumper, sheets, skirt). My MIL is a quilter so she is going to make a blanket later when it can be used. The website that we bought from sells all of the fabric by the yard so things can be made and matched later which I really like!

  • I won't be buying one either. DH's aunt is making a beautiful blanket in an Arctic theme. She also cross-stitched two matching wall hangings. I bought a matching pattern and am making a valance for the window. Other than those couple of pieces, we will just be brightening up the room with some green decor, sheets and maybe a dust ruffle. I've heard of too many people not using the bedding set, so I'm thankful for their advice!

  • We are getting a few cute fitted sheets, but mainly just solid colored fitted sheets.  I am making a blanket to carry around with LO, to lay on floor etc.

eta: We are getting a breathable bumper with a striped pattern on it in the same colors as the sheets.  I don't want to get too crazy with it all b/c I tend towards clutter. Embarrassed

  • yeah we're passing on the bedding set too. We registered for some solid coloured fitted sheets and a breathable bumper thats white. I think it will be easier to decorate around since we're not locked into a theme just yet. I think they're expensive for what they are, and there isnt anything we LOVE either, so...

  • I commissioned an Etsy dealer to make coordinating crib skirt, sheets, and curtains.

  • I bought one last time, but mostly wish I hadn't.  We moved DD up to a toddler bed and, since the crib bedding set only had a fitted and not a regular sheet (and we're using it for the LO anyway), we bought her a few toddler bedding sets, which each cost us about $25 and included pillow case, two sheets, and a comforter.  Honestly, that seems like more of the way to go anyway (if you plan to do a toddler bed) since you get half of what comes in the crib bedding set, plus some other stuff, at a fraction of the cost.  It's not like we're supposed to use the crib bumpers anyway.
  • We also aren't getting one.  I haven't found any that I like.  We will get sheets - I ordered a fabric swatch the other day to check the color and feel, so hopefully that will be perfect.

We will get a blanket/comforter when we find something we like, though that's turning out to be tough.  (I want her bedroom to be royal blue and white with pink accents  - turns out no one else in the world wants bedding or fabric like that!).

I love the look of my crib, so I don't want to cover the bottom with a crib skirt.  A friend has offered to make curtains, so once we have it more done, we'll have her do that.  We found small round rugs at IKEA that we like.

As for a crib bumper, I think we'll wait on that.  The little girl I nanny for had a problem when she got big enough to stand in the crib - she'd get her leg caught between the bars in the middle of the night.  So they took theirs out and put it on.  But if that happens with our baby, we'll just go find a bumper we like.

  • I am but that's because I found one that I love and its inexpensive, we weren't going to. We plan on converting his bed until he grows out of it so it will get good use. Its not babyish either so I won't get tired of it. I will use everything in the set, bumper when he gets bigger and blanket for outside the crib, until we convert, so I think its worth the money.

  • Another no.  Just getting crib sheets and dust ruffle to match our wall colors, and maybe a mesh bumper.  Lots of family members quilt and knit so we are set.

  • We aren't getting a set. I mixed and matched and just got a crib sheet, dust ruffle, and a bumper (I like the look of bumpers, once LO goes into crib I'll take it out until she's older). My MIL is making a quilt, which I will probably just put on the rocker or something.

  • Nope, I have already made a quilt and I plan on making all the things to go with it. We may buy a breathable bumper though to keep the kiddo safe.

  • My sisters bought me one.  I probably would not have bought one if they hadn't!

  • I actually made my own quilt out of some yellow and gray material (since I am team green!) and my sister in law ordered the same material and said she would make me a blanket, skirt, and a couple sheets.  So I am set for that.  I am not going with a "theme" rather I am picking color theme of yellow/gray. The room walls are already yellow and I am going to put up some dark gray roman shades.

  • I bought a bumper on sale at PBK and then just two solid sheets from there as well. Just got it in the mail and looks great! Our crib does not need a crib skirt and I thought a thick comforter for a baby seemed impractical. Here is the bumper I got-
