Adoption

NEW TO THIS BOARD

Hi! I'm new to this board and just have a few questions for anyone that may be able to answer. My husband & I are considering domestic adoption and are just researching it for now. Has anyone here done domestic adoption and if so what was the outcome? Did the birth parents/family try to claim the child back? Is there a time frame that the birth parents have to claim the child back? I live in NJ and I'm not sure if the laws or rules are different in each state. If you live in NJ and have experienced domestic adoption maybe you can help answer my question and give me recomendations of some places. Thank you!

Re: NEW TO THIS BOARD

  • Hi and welcome. You'll get a lot of good information on this board.

We're just starting into the adoption process (hoping to choose an agency by the beginning of the year). From what we've learned, each state has laws on the timeline where a birthmother can change her mind about adoption vs parenting herself. Once that timeline passes (I believe it's 72 hours in NJ), unless the birthparent agreed to the adoption under duress or the agency/lawyer/facilitator was shady and things weren't done right, the adoption will go forward. There are cases where the birthparents change their mind before the timeline passes, but that's a risk you take with domestic adoption.

It's a common first question in domestic adoption, since everyone seems to have a horror story of birthparents changing their minds.

I live in PA but work in NJ, so we're looking at different agencies right now.

There are a ton of women on this board who have had successful domestic adoptions, and even some who have experienced disruptions. You'll be able to get a good balanced picture of the process from their perspectives.

  • We have completed a domestic adoption.  We did have a failed match where the birth mother basically tried to exhort money from us.

In our 2nd attempt, we were called about a baby that was already born.  We picked him up from the hospital when he was released the next day.  We adopted from Texas.  In this state, the mother terminates her rights 48-72 hours after the birth and there is no waiting period after that.

There's a lot of things to do before you even decide on an agency.  You've got to have a home study so you could probably be looking into that.  Also, you can search the internet about domestic adoption.

    Good Luck!
