Gripe Water?

Hey Mommies,

My DD tends to cry a lot during BF and afterward. She straightens her legs our and looks like she has gas. She is gassy throughout the day. So I tried some gripe water and it seemed to work she went to sleep right away.

Anyone else using Gripe Water or have advice on gas relief?

Re: Gripe Water?

  • My LO has had trouble with gassiness for several weeks now and we tried everything. I did bicycle legs with her, rubbed her tummy, kept her sitting up for awhile after feedings, and gas drops. None of those worked. I decided to try the gripe water and it worked wonders! Now, I only give it to her if I see she is having trouble after a feeding and before she goes to bed. (which is always after a feeding) The first night I gave it to her, she slept better than ever. (Before she would grunt and groan alot during the night) She has also been napping better during the day. We love gripe water in our house :) Hope it keeps working for your precious one!

  • Thanks! Glad to know it works for others too. Is it possible for the baby to have too much?

I have heard that it IS possible to have too much.  You can fill your LO up on gripe water instead of BM or formula.

  • THis may be a silly question, but what is gripe water? Emma is gassy and miserable and it breaks my heart to see/hear her in pain. Is it something make at home or do I buy it? And how much.often should I give it to her?

    Thanks! :)

  • It has worked for us.  We only give it to LO when he is very gassy and seems to be having trouble/working on farting.

  • I have been using it, but LO just spits it up immediately.  So hard to get her to take the appropriate dosage- any advice on getting her to swallow it and keep it down?

  • We use Gripe Water regularly around here ... DD is super gassy, it is the only thing that helps her sleep at night.

As for trying to keep it in, we use a syringe and I just shoot a little into her mouth at a time.  She seems better able to swallow and keep it down that way.

I took this tip from a Mommy who posted a couple of weeks ago: use the syringe to put the med in a bottle nipple, then let LO drink it that way. It has worked like a charm for us, even though Connor has only had a bottle a few times, he still knows what to do. I tried the syringe method, and he just spit it out...I'm guessing it came out too fast, despite my best efforts.

p.s.--it works well to get rid of his hiccups, too!

  • I've been researching this for a little while and am so happy to see that it actually works! Is there a particular brand that is preferred? Thanks!

  • I usually just put the dosage in a snappies bottle and she drinks it right down. Its sweet so I think she really likes it. It is possible to give too much. It says no more than 6 times in 24 hrs. Walmart only had one brand to choose from and it works just fine.

  • Mommy's Bliss is the brand at Walmart - if you buy it, open the box first because mine had a coupon for $1.50 off in it (realized AFTER buying it...). It was about $9/$10  for the bottle and it's suggested to only use it fir 4 weeks. We give itto DS as part of his feeding - just put the 1/2 tsp dosage in with the milk (he drinks every.last.drop) and it works just fine.
