I never thought I'd be making a post with that title.
Anyways... I have a few questions:
- What all do I need to start CDing? Assuming we like it after trying it, I'd like to be able to present DH with some number comparisons. Other than diapers and inserts, I have wetbag(s) and a poo sprayer on my list.
- Preferably, I'd like to go with AI2s. Is GroVia the only AI2 brand out there? I keep finding plenty of AIO brands, but I can't understand why anyone would rather stuff inserts and have to wash both, when you can just wash the inserts and reuse the shell.
- How many shells and how many inserts would I need? Snaps or velcro?
- Is there a "CDing for dummies" website I should know about/bookmark?
PS - I totally know about OSC diapers and I will definitely have mommabear make me some. But I'd also like to go to a store and feel some up before investing, and maybe try to snag some cheapiers on EBay. The state of Washington ate my OSC CD sample ![]()
Re: CDers, come in
LOL! Apparently your sample is in Florida today, so ridiculous.
Anywho, if you really want to give it a go, I'd suggest doing a diaper trial like at Jillian's Drawers.com (on a mac so I'm really sorry I can't make all these linky). You pay $160, they send you a sampling of lots of the big brands, you try them for a month and send them back for a refund less $10 fee. Or you can keep the ones you like and "buy" them. Really great for seeing what kind you like!
There are a TON of people who make AI2s, maybe not "big names" that you could easily google, but if you decide you really like them I know we can help you find some WAHM made ones (not just mine).
What do you need?- I'd suggest 8-12 diapers/day multiplied by how many days you want to go between washing, not more than 4 because then stuff gets nasty. Then 3-4 good overnight diapers. I think mine are the best, but I'm biased, there's a lot of options out there. Honestly if you're looking mostly to save money, we LOVE our Bumgenius Flips. It's a cover and insert, like the AI2s you saw. Cheap, easy, awesome. Or a few covers (any brand) and prefolds tri-folded to lay inside! So many options, seriously you should do the trial, lol!
As for CDing for dummies, I loved the website Dirty Diaper Laundry.com She has a TON of info there, including video reviews of each major brand. She's got a glossary of all the terms you'll come across, it's just really comprehensive and I like it.
Velcro vs snaps- I love snaps. But it's totally a personal thing. Again the trial would be helpful.
HTHs!
Oh, and you'll only really need diapers, sprayer, wetbags, and CD safe detergent. You can check out this site for info- https://www.diaperjungle.com/detergent-chart.html
PS- please don't feel like you need to get anything from me. i'm just one little diaper maker in a world full of them and you most likely will fall in love with something different! Every brand will fit every baby differently, and have its advantages and disadvantages. I totally consider it a win that you're even interested in cloth. Period.
What you need? Diapers, period. Everything else is gravy. We used the arm & hammer diaper pail we got from our shower until we could be bothered to get off our lazy asses to buy a flip-top pail ($15). Our wetbag was $15 (and as I've discussed, I wish I bought the slightly pricier one because the one I have is trash, literally). The sprayer was $50, and our stash, 20 brand-new one size Fuzzibunz, was $450. I started CDing when she was 7 weeks old, and have so far used 3 containers of 80 load Charlie's Soaps, at $15 per ($5 off on amazon atm! I'm buying my 4th and 5th containers, lol). Our water bill did go up, but it's hard to say by how much since my area jacked up prices right when we switched. I will say though that if you can it's preferable to buy used with the more high-tech diapers... they get more absorbent as you use them over time, assuming you strip occasionally. I know the wool soakers are way less of a PITA used, too (you don't have to screw around with lanolin).
I wash every 2 days with 20 diapers. Any more than that between washes and it's like getting hit in the face when I open the pail. I use ~6-8 diapers per day so when I get down to 5 or so diapers I wash, unless I'm stripping them in which case I just wait until they're all dirty and put her in disposables while I strip (once a month or so).
I use pockets exclusively (fuzzibunz specifically). The reason I went with stuffing and washing the whole thing is because it minimizes time while she's actually naked during a change (she is an intractable little wiggle worm), and because once all the laundering and folding stuff is done, they behave exactly like disposables. Well, with snap closures, lol. It takes all of 5 minutes when they come out of the dryer to stuff them... it sounds like a pain on paper but it's honestly not, and you KNOW I'm a lazyass b*tch.
jilliansdrawers is a good one. If you have your heart set on a particular brand, that brand's website is where you want to be in terms of laundering recommendations.Just wanted to pop in and tell you that I LOVE the site www.sweetbottomsbaby.com. Free shipping on everything and they have good tips and stuff on their site and blog too.
www.allaboutclothdiapers.com is also good. And a lot of people love www.theclothdiaperwhisperer.com.
And, I second what pp said about Flips. They've worked well for us, and I use them for night time just with an extra insert. I also agree about the ease of pockets...DH loves using pockets.
Hope that helps.
That's what we use! Haven't had any problems so far! Love it.
Yes. I use it and have not had any problems. I have also used regular tide..and that also works well.
I was going to mention also, that I love Bum Genius Elementals. Cottonbabies has some 2nds on sale right now. They are great, I have a few and wish I had all of these and no pockets. They are really easy to use.

I also have a few Grovia hybrids ans their all in ones..love both of them.
I second the PP rec for sweetbottoms baby boutique.

They carry CJ's Butter...it is the best CD safe diaper cream ever.
For all in 2s I like Star Baby Designs on Etsy.
There are also lots of WAHM's that make them on Hyena Cart.
