? On which shots R Manditory at Birth????

Hello Ladies,

I am a first time mom and have ?'s about shots necessary at birth. I have my mom, mother-in-law, friends and family members telling me all different ones. I have to admit it is really stressing me out and driving me crazy!Zip it!

I have looked up on which ones to have given. Then I have my OVER OBSSESIVE mother-in-law breathing down my neck about everything and anything I bring up. I have to admit she is driving me crazy. I mean it doesn't even stop there. It goes on about how I should be running my life and my unborn sons. Surprise

Please any little advice will help!

Thank you. Smile

  • No shots are mandatory at birth.

  • My best advice is to talk to your OB about it. They will be able to help you with the specifics that your hospital adheres to. Also, if you have selected a Ped's practice already you can always call their advice nurse and ask them.

GL.....and whenever your MIL starts breathing down your neck...respond, "thank you so much for your concern. I'll take that into account," and then do what you and your DH think is best. =)

  • I agree with the PPs. You should talk to your pediatrician. They can give you the best advice. And tell your MIL to shove it. :) She had her chance to raise children.

  • The typical vaxes, shots, and meds offered at birth are Hepatitis B, Vitamin K, and Erythromycin (antibiotic eye ointment).  None are mandatory.  You are free to decline any and all of them.  It's worth having a conversation with your pediatrician to find out why they are given and what the benefits/risks are of doing them.
  • If you decline Vit K shot it is a very good plan to do it orally. I did that. We got the dose they normally give orally and then ordered some more to give at intervals I think at 2 or 3 weeks and again at 2 months or something. It's important for preventing something called hemorrhagic disease of the newborn. We didn't have any of the shots

  • I agree you can skip all the shots and just take Vit. K orally before birth. You will probably want your spouse on the same page because someone will need to be alert and with the baby at all times to enforce your wishes.

  • You can take K but the baby needs it too.

  • Thank you ladies you are making me feel so much better. Smile

I will talk with my pediatrician about shots.

I will also make sure my hubby knows my wishes and let the OB know what we want. Big Smile
