Carseat on flight

We are flying to England on Monday. It will be about an 8.5 hour flight & we are trying to decide if we should put DD in her carseat or not.  I'm thinking she will be easier to control if she's strapped in.  The down side is she WILL kick the seat in front of her.  We've flown before & I couldn't get her to stop at one point, frustrating for all involved (but we were in business class so the guy moved his seat back forward & she could no longer reach it), we will be in coach this time.  So if she weren't in her car seat she couldn't kick that seat.

Re: Carseat on flight

  • I would probably do no carseat - for the person in front of you.  Also, I know my ds like to lay down on the seats when over night flight. Good luck

  • I have never used the car seat on a flight and I especially wouldn't use it on an international overnight flight. DD pretty much falls asleep the minute we take off on those kinds of flights and sttn with her head on my lap (seat belt around her waist). I am pretty sure she would have woken up well before we landed if I'd put her in a car seat on any of our overnight flights in the past.

  • When we flew to the UK they gave us a car seat. There wasn't even the option of him not using one Confused
  • I wouldn't bring it.  We've flown w/ DD quite a bit (never over seas though) and never used a car seat.  She would go nuts if she were strapped in the whole time, then when we took her out of the seat it would be taking up a seat (which means she'd be on our laps).  GL!

  • If I had a choice I wouldn't bring the carseat on the plane. Last time we flew we didn't bring one and it was so much easier. As a PP mentioned, DS didn't want to be strapped in the whole time and since we didn't have any place else to put the carseat he'd then end up on our lap or trying to play in the aisle.

When we didn't have his carseat he sat fairly happily in his seat where he could play, move around, look at the window, and as you say most importantly NOT kick the seat in front of him. Plus he was able to lay down to take a nap.

  • I would not bring the carseat in the cabin. I flew with DD recently without her carseat and it gave her lots of room to color or lay down, I could put the chair back in front of her down to put her dvd player on... it's just more comfortable and easier, IMO.

This must have been on Virgin?

We fly to the UK often and stopped using a car seat with ds at 18 months. The kicking of the seats is the worst part and very hard to control when they are in a car seat.  We use a CARES harness for him, which is just as safe, super easy to carry and use.

We use a CARES harness as well for flying. I've never used a car seat but I have heard from people that if possible, strap the seat in RF so they kick their own seat and not someone elses.

We use a CARES harness too.  I used an infant seat when LO was younger and the harness is so much easier!  He liked it and we called it his "seat belt."

  • I wouldn't bring it on the plane.  I just flew for the first time this week without using the carseat and it was so much better.  DD was able to move around in her seat without bothering anyone (kneeling to color or look out the window), she could use the tray to color or watch her DVD, she wasn't able to kick the seat in front of her and she could even stand on the floor in front of her seat.  I've always brought her carseat on the plane in the past, but from now on we'll be flying without it.
