Anyone who is pumping...???

I'm so confused as to how much I should be giving DS.  Here's our history...he's been refusing my boob for almost a month now so I've been pumping 4-5 out of 7 of his sessions.  I've been giving him anywhere between 6 and 8 ounces at each feeding and he still seems hungry!!!!!  He actually fusses and seems mad at the end when it's taken away.  I've been reading Kellymom and it seems like we're giving him WAY too much, but I hate it when it seems like he's starving afterwards.  What is everyone else doing??  Going by cues or something else??  And to make matters worse, I'm barely able to keep up with his demands now.

  • I know they are all different but DD will only take about 4 oz from a bottle. That is on the low end though. I am pretty sure she just waits for me to return and takes more from the boob in our case.

Jealous...I wish we had this problem!!  DS will wait for the bottle..:(

  • I EP.  He usually takes a 4oz bottle, but lately he's been wanted a big more.  I'll start with his 4oz bottle and if he cries when he's done, I'll put 2 more oz in and whatever he finishes he finishes.  Sometimes, he'll even cry after that, but that's rare.

  • We give 4 oz of breast milk she usually drinks it all, and is starting to go for 5 a couple times a day. Do you think he is just looking to comfort suck? I know dd does that a lot when I nurse her.

  • We offer her 4 oz. bottles, and sometimes she'll only eat 3 and then sometimes like tonight she chowed down on the 4 and I had 2 oz. left from the previous pumping session so I gave her that and she ate that as well. I would love to offer her more, but I also don't want to waste it if she's not really hungry.

  • b is 16.3lbs and eats 4oz of bm every 2-3hrs. On occasion, he will drink 5-6oz at a sitting, but that is rare.

This is exactly what we do. He's always extra hungry in the evenings and usually takes the extra 2 ounces and still cries for more..I try to distract him for as long as I can though, cause he's usually spit up if I give any more to him.

  • We give Grace 6 ounces everytime she takes a bottle. I barely keeping up with it since she still eats every 2.5 hours. I forget if it was someone on here or the Facebook group say their dr said you really shouldn't be giving more than 6 ounces per feeding and if you are then you might want to switch to solids. I don't know if that is true or not. I was planning on no solids til 6 months but the way she is eating it might be earlier.

  • For the past week or two he's been needing more. Now he gets 5oz per bottle except his first morning one when he just snacks on it and usually eats about 2oz. However, last night he set 10oz in 2 hours.... Tonight were going to start trying formula at night to see if that fills him up longer, especially since now I'm barely producing his demands :(
  • I EP and only give 3.5-4ox during the day, and maybe 5oz first thing in the morning or before bed.  That seems like a lot more than most of the EPers on the Breastfeeding Board give too.  Because BM increases and changes in calories, you shouldn't have to increase the volume a great deal.  I am not sure what to suggest.  DS will occassionally need a second small bottle (usually in the evening) soon after finishing one, but it is rare for him to refuse a bottle or leave it unfinihsed if we offer.  If I stop to burp him though, before offering more, by the time he does he usually isn't showing signs he wants more.

  • My LO is eating that much, too, while she's at day care or home with her dad on Saturdays. She will eat at least 6-7 ozs in a sitting and it's a good day if she can make it 3 hours between feedings. At first I was concerned she was overeating. However, she is happy, doesn't spit up, and sleeps normally, so I just attribute it to her being a big girl (she's 16 pounds and barely 3 1/2 months old). My pedi said they shouldn't be eating more than 8 ounces in a sitting. I feel your pain about keeping up, though. I cannot keep up with her and am having to supplement with formula. My feeling is some BM is better than none.

  • When V is at the babysitter's house he eats two 8 oz. bottles.  I thought it seemed like a lot, but he is SOOOOO much happier and content now that we have increased the amount.  He sleeps better and is happy all the time.  I usually nurse him once in the AM and 2 times at night too.  I have a feeling I won't be able to hold off on solids until 6 months because he is such a hungry guy.

  • That does seem like a lot. Gabby gets 4-4.5 bottles during the day. Before bed, she gets 5ish ounces. (i breastfed at weird times due to my work schedule.) Have you tried offering a pacifier when he's finished his bottle to see if he just wants to suck? That would be my first guess.
