Baby Names

James...for a girl??!!

We really like the name James should we have a boy.  However a friend of mine today just mentioned how they loved that name for a girl!  What?!  Is this becoming a new trend?  If so, it is really making me want to reconsider this name for our potential son.  Personally, I am not a fan of unisex type names and especially ones that started out as a boy's name.  Please let me hear your thoughts on this as I am hoping others also feel that James is a solid boys name still!  Thanks! Btw- I do know of one actress who has the name James...

Re: James...for a girl??!!

  • I've heard of it being used for girls, but I think it's a name that will always be thought of as a solid boys name!  Those poor girls will always have issues with people thinking they are boys on paper.  A boy would never have someone think he was a girl on paper with the name James!

  • There is a girl at the school I work at named Jaymes, note added "y" to make it different. I thought at first just based on the name it was a boy, but no. I kinda like it as a girls name, but do think boy before I'd ever guess girl.

  • I have heard it used as a girls name before, only once though and she is a celebrity. James King:

To me though, that name is ALL boy. I do not like it as a girls name.

  • We were going to name our daughter James, after her father and grandfather, but our last name is very masculine and we just felt that it would rob her of the opportunity to have a feminine name if she wanted one (because we both don't like Jamie.. no offense to anyone). It may end up her middle name instead.

I love it for a boy or for a girl. If this baby popped out a boy (surprise!) we wouldn't hesitate to name him James.

  • James is all boy.

I have heard of James as a mn for girls though.

I don't care how many girls end up with this name, I think it will always very clearly be a boy's name. Anybody who would name their daughter this is just clueless and have obviously not thought through what it would mean for their daughter.

    Yes

completely agree, I have never met a woman named James, luckily.

  • ew. as a middle name it's ok but i HATE boy names on girls. it's not like rowan or sawyer or harper or other names that are considered unisex. BOY names need to REMAIN that way!

  • I really like it but I do understand the confusion at a young age,

I thought of this too. It is more of a celeb kid name instead. I think it would be hard to grow up with a name that is all boy.

  • All I can think of is Helen Hunt on Mad About You.

I don't hate the idea of James as a formal name for a girl. But think I'd prefer to be called "Jamie" if it were my name. That being said it seems a bit dated?

DH and I are naming our boy a one all boy name turned unisex. Before we settled on the name I really liked boy names for girls. Now it's starting to trouble me. But I don't see James ever becoming more popular on the girls side.

  • I know a girl in my city whose first name is James. I thought it was interesting at first, but never really thought about it since then.

I think it could be OK for a girl if you really love it!

  • I know a couple who used "James" as a middle name for their daughter (after her father). While I believe it could be used as a girl's name (and I actually kind of like it as one-- because I like masculine names for girls) I don't believe it will ever become a popular girl's name... I don't think you'll have anything to worry about.
