working out and cramping?

I've been working out since the end of the first trimester.  I'm working out 4 days a week-3 days of walking, 1 day of prenatal yoga.

My walks are 3 miles and it takes me a little less than an hour.  I can't go that fast pushing a stroller. :)

The last couple of weeks, I've been getting cramps on both sides of my belly when I'm walking.  I usually just keep going and wait for it to pass.  Today, I had to slow down, then stop, because the cramping was really painful.

Is anyone else experiencing workout cramping?

Re: working out and cramping?

  • Yesterday DH and I went to a huge mall and I was walking around for like 3 hours and started getting really bad cramping. I didn't know if it was braxton hicks or not because this is my first. It hurt so much I actually called the doctor on call for the first time. He said with all the walking, I was probably dehydrated and it was irritating my uterus. After I sat for a while and drank two bottles of gatorade, it went away. Maybe you're dehydrated?

  • I had cramping the other day after exercising and spent some time researching all the different websites on cramping and braxton hicks and anything I could find related to pregnancy (since I'd never had pregnancy cramping before).  It's apparently somewhat common after exercise and, as the other poster said, more likely if you're dehydrated.  Hopefully, it doesn't continue for you :)
  • I'm so glad you posted this because the same thing happens to me when I do a lot of walking (or I am walking in a hurry... which is always I feel like). Sometimes I have to stop completely. I'm going to watch my water intake and see if there is a correlation. Thanks ladies!

  • I told my doctor that this was happening to me and he told me that he didn't want me to exercise (I was only walking to and from school one mile each way).  He told me to take the bus and take it easy.

Did your Doctor tell you why or provide specifics on the cause/issue? I'm really curious because this happened to me just yesterday. I work out frequently and yesterday went for an hour long walk/hike. Towards the end I got a stabbing pain in my side. It was the first and only time it's happened, but it was fairly painful and caused me to stop and take a break. The pain passed and I felt better after a few minutes. I did realize that my water intake had been too low that day. I'm really hoping that this doesn' t mean that exercise is an issue.
