If you use a house cleaning service

I'm due with DD#2 in early January and I have this crazy dream where every room in my house is actually clean at the same time when the baby comes home.  So we're thinking of hiring a service to come in and do a really thorough cleaning, and then come in a few times a month after that, at least until we get back into a routine where I can maintain it myself.

If you have a service, can I ask how often they come and what you pay?  Our house is pretty small: 3 bedroom, 1 bath, and about 1400 sf.  If you had a deep cleaning done, was it way more than a "regular" cleaning?

  • We use a service, but I will tell you that prices vary greatly by city/state. That said, we pay $110 for a full cleaning every 3 weeks using Merry Maids. We have a 4 bed, 2 bath, 3 floor house, about 1700 sf. The deep cleaning is usually a lot more (maybe $200+?) and then it's cheaper after that. FWIW, I LOVE having a cleaning service and there are many other things I would cut out first before I cut them out.

  • I've had our house cleaned 3 times over the past year.  It's 2200sq feet with tile and carpet.  The first time I paid $225 and they did an amazing, amazing job.  The second time I used a smaller, family-owned and operated business.  I paid $135 and they did a pretty good job but I'd say it was definitely more like a regular cleaning than the in-depth, deep cleaning we had a few months earlier.  The second company missed dusting a couple of ceiling fans and the soap they used left the tile a little sticky for a few days.  My husband and I are pretty clean people so I don't have the need for them to come more frequently than 3 times a year (maximum).  Also, be sure to tip the cleaning staff when they are at your house.  I didn't realize that it was proper etiquette and didn't tip when we had the house cleaned the first time.

  • We went with a small, family-owned place.  They were licensed/bonded.  We have 1,156 square feet - 2/2 and they charged $60 for the first clean and $40, there after.  Pretty sure it was a smokin' deal.
