Baby Names

I come to you, knowing you will be harsh.

My wife is completely stuck on the name Iagan for a boy. The thing is that it is growing on me. Help. Tear apart the names on this list, because otherwise I might let her have her wish. It means 'little fiery one" ... in Scottish (no, we aren't Scottish). Her name also means that. The babe is half Filipino. Right now as it stands, the list is:

Stuart Iagan or Stuart Richard

Iagan Joseph

Joseph Iagan

If you would like, feel free to rank, criticize, or otherwise weigh in on our girl names:

Phoebe Eloise

Eloise Jeannine

Phillippa Eloise or Phillippa Iagan

((If you are simply going to say NMS or say they are all horrible, please include your favorite names, so that I can make an informed decision as to how much weight I should give your opinion.))

Re: I come to you, knowing you will be harsh.

  • I think I love the sound of Joseph Iagan. It's really got a great flow. I always love all the girl names you post, and I'm glad to see Phoebe is still on the list. Phoebe Eloise is perfection!

  • I don't know how to pronounce Iagen, but I love what it means.

I vote Stuart Iagen.  Joseph bores me, but Stuart has just the right amount of punch to it without being too weird.  Very stylish and cute enough for a little boy but would work well for a grown man.  I am imagine him having excellent taste (great clothes, well read, etc.) with the name Stuart Iagen.

    LOVE Eloise, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!

Love Phillipa too, especially with nn Pippa.

Phoebe is just not as cool as Eloise or Phillipa, IMO.  It is kind of meh for me.

  • I dont like Iagan at all. The meaning is cool, but I dont like the sound of it. I do however like Stuart Richard, or Stuart Joseph. For the girls names I am not a big fan of Eloise. I love Phoebe and Jeannine though.

Edited to fix my idiotic spelling error. Sorry!

  • I think I'd put Iagan in the mn spot.  I do like Stuart Iagan and Joseph Iagan.

Of the girls, my favorite is Eloise Jeannine.  Phoebe would be #2...I don't like Phillippa.

  • I'm not trying to be nasty, but my first thought was Iguana.

Stuart Richard and Phoebe Eloise are my two favorites.

  • I like them all besides Stuart. I don't know why, but it doesn't sound appealing to me. I LOVE Joseph. A+ on that. Iagan is nice, too. I think it sounds better as a middle name for Joseph. (or Joseph Richard sounds nice, too.)

I love your girls names, especially Eloise.

PS - My boy name is Brendan and my girl name is Tessa. Feel free to disregard my opinion if you hate them, haha!!

Joseph Iagan is my favorite out of the boys list, but I like them all.

I love your girl names. Phoebe Eloise is my favorite, followed closely by Eloise Jeanine (I'd spell it only with one n). I like Phillippa (or Phillipa) Eloise, too.

  • I think Iagan is a great middle name, and Stuart Iagan is a great name (I might even still this combo--Stuart has been on my short list for a while now). Love Philippa Eloise (please lose the double L), but dislike Philippa with Iagan as I think Philippa works best with a really feminine middle name. Overall, I think you have a pretty solid list here.

LOL! I am with you on this one. I think I know 9 Ellies now.

Anyway, I think Stuart is such a cute name! Iagan is not terrible, but is much better as a MN. (For a boy only)

Of your girl choices, I prefer Eloise. Phillippa is OK...are you planning on using the NN Pippa? If so, I think it is trendy-sounding due to the royal wedding thing.

I think if we were stuck in 2011, the royal wedding would be an issue. But I *hope* that Pippa is a boring housewife with children before kids born in 2012 ever see their first issue of People.

  • First off, Phoebe Eloise is absolutely divine! Eloise Jeannine is good too, and I like Phillippa Eloise (Pippa is a stunning nickname!)

Iagan is a legit name, although I cannot see the appeal (although the meaning is kind of cute...). If your wife truly adores it, maybe you can compromise and use it as a middle name? Iago is a cute nickname. And btw, I'm glad you're considering Stuart. It's a nice classic that doesn't get much love nowadays.

  • After reading this post a bit ago and letting these names sink in, Iagan is really growing on me.  I quite like it!  I really love Stuart Iagan!  I like both Joseph Iagan and Iagan Joseph.  I do think Joseph is a tad bland, but I still think it's a nice name. I'm not sure why, but I don't really care for the sound of Stuart Richard.

I love your girls names!  Eloise is my favorite of your first names.  However, when added with your mn's, I like Phoebe Eloise the best.  Philippa is nice, but definitely only with Eloise.  Iagan makes it a bit too masculine.

  • Joseph Iagan is the best

not a fan the girl names although they are all ok just nms

  • Here are my problems with Iagan...One, he'll be forever be required to spell/pronounce it for people.  Two, it looks to me like Lagan at fist glance.  I definitely prefer Joseph, especially if he will go by his full name.  I think Iagan would make a fine mn.

I like Phoebe :)  Cute and spunky.

  • Iagan is better as a MN I think.  I like it with both Stuart and Joseph.  I feel like as a FN he would be forever pronouncing it for people.

I LOVE Phoebe.  I am trying to get DH on board for it if we should have another girl.  Eloise is NMS, but sounds nice with Phoebe.  Not a fan of Philippa.

  • Love all your girl names. Of your boy names, Lagan in just okay for me - kind-of reminds me of the word "logger."

    What about Logan ?

Stuart and Joseph are both great and I prefer those over Lagan.

Stupid font. It is Iagan, with an 'I' not an 'L.' Pronounced Ee-gan.

  • Looks too much like laggin...like you are laggin behind. Just odd to me.

  • Are you going to use the nickname Pippa? If so, I vote Phillippa Eloise.

  • I like iagan. The longer I think about it, the more I like it. I compromised on my sons name and I'm glad I did. I love it now. I also like Joseph but I'm having a hard time with Stuart. I like all your girl names but I think Eloise ages the best.
  • imageFlashy:

I tend to pronounce names as I see them. I would say it "Lag-en"

but thats just me. I don;t like it.

That is all well and good, but be aware that the font on the Bump is keeping you from recognizing a capital 'I' and you didn't notice it when you then retried it with a capital 'L.' annoying font. You are not alone.
  • I like the flow of Joseph Iagan. For a girl I like Phoebe Eloise.
  • i've never heard of Iagen before.  i have to think about it for a second......the more i say it out loud and think about it i kinda like it too, but i think it should def be used as a middle name.  i think it sounds best with Joseph.  Iagen is a little too out there for me, which is why i think it's great for a mn.

me no likes your girl names.  Phoebe is the closest one that i maybe possibly might could get on board with.  Elloise sounds like some old blue-haired lady, which she would be one day, but not for a long time.  oh wait, i kinda like Jeannine (ja-neen, right?), i had a coworker with that name and she was so smart, pretty, nice body, beautiful hair and really nice.

Phillippa, is that fa-lip-a?  guess it doesn't matter, i don't like it.  for some reason it doesn't sound like a name to me.

so far our girl name choices are: Maya, Vanessa, Veronica, Layla, Courtney, Kahlia (not sure of spelling, heard it on an audio book and like the sound, wait- that was the first time i've ever typed it out and it looks too close to Kahlua for me.  maybe we could use a legit alternate spelling?  hmmm, need to think about that more), Audrina, Asia, Andrea and Leslie.

boys: Elijah, Brandon, Derrick/Derek, Javier, Marcus, Michael, Anthony, Andrew, James, Jared, Christopher, Charles, Andres, Nathaniel/Nathan and Deonte.

our baby is mexican, white and black.

ETA: ok, so i just googled the audio book to see the spelling of Kahlia and the author spells it Calia.  i like that a lot!

  • I keep wanting to pronounce Iagan EE-ah-gan (like Iago). I like it pronounced EE-gan, but I think people will get it wrong. Joseph Iagan is really nice, and I like Stuartwith either MN.

I am not a fan of Pheoebe. It just has a silly sound to me. But I really like Eloise and Phillippa. I think they're both lovely and underused. I don't like Iagan as a MN for Phillippa.

    I rank them:

Joseph Iagan, Stuart Iagan, Iagan Joseph

Phillippa Eloise, Eloise Jeannine, Phoebe Eloise

  • I admit I didn't know how to prounounce it, either. I would've guessed Eye-again or E-again. (I keep adding an extra syllable in the middle for that 'a'). That said, I like the way Ee-Ghin sounds, just don't like how it looks. I would say to spell it Egan, but that takes away the cool meaning, I think. My final verdict: use it as a middle name. I like Joseph Iagan best.

Love Eloise and love Phillippa. Phoebe is just okay to me. Phillippa Eloise gets my vote.

  • I love unusual names... so I going to differ from previous posters, and choose Iagan for a first name! Yes, I would have to be told the first time how to pronounce it. No big deal.

I also like both Eloise and Phoebe a lot.

(My personal favorites for style judgment: Aurelia for a girl; Atticus, Dexter, or Sebastian for a boy)
