C-sections

Need advice re: tubal during CS

DH and I have decided we're 2 and through, and I just found out (literally an hour ago) that I will have to have CS next week for sure. It was thrown out on the table a few weeks ago as a possibility, so I've been thinking about having my tubes tied at the same time but haven't done a whole lot of research yet on the subject (truthfully, I've been in denial that it would come to this).

If you've had your tubes tied during a CS, can you share your experience? If this is something you're planning to have done, do you have any good sites you can point me toward for more info? TIA!

Re: Need advice re: tubal during CS

  • I have been doing research as I am thinking of exact same thing. To my horror every entry I read warned against doing it because of the list of side effects .I would rather go through an other pregnancy than to suffer what a lot of women have said after their tubal.Just Google Tubal Side effects and see the thousands of entries..I am considering the Copper IUD which lasts 10 years and has no hormones. On Dr OZ all the female Gynos use this themselves and I figure if it is the choice of Drs I should too.

  • Yeah, I've seen bad things too on the web. DH offered to get snipped before this was even a possibility, but I figured since I would already be there and be open, why not? But, if the risks outweigh the benefits, I may just ask him to go through with his vasectomy afterall. He's more than willing, considering the hell I've been through with my pregnancies.

  • I felt the same way as the previous posters at first.  I read all of the horror stories and started to talk myself out off it.  When I asked a couple of people that I knew had it done, they said everything is fine for them.  The stories that you read about online are one-sided.  Nobody's on the internet saying how wonderful tubal ligation is.  Everyone wants to let it be known that there are side effects.  One person that I talk to that had it done said that the side effects that people complain about can pop up even without a tubal ligation...some of them are just things that may come along with having a baby (depression) or just aging in general (change in menstrual cycles).

  • I just had a tubal done during my c-section three weeks ago.  So far, so good.  I haven't had any side effects that I would consider abnormal.  My thoughts on the matter were, I was already going to be opened up, so this became the most sensible form of birth control we could go with.

  • My sister had a tubal during her c/s with her third baby.  Her LO is almost two years old now and she has not had any issues that I am aware of and she tells me just about everything. I know she did have some PPD, but she had that with her other two babies also.

You will always find horror stories on the Internet. I'd suggest doing some reputable research and talking to your doctor about the risks and benefits and then making a decision that makes the most sense for your family based on real information.

  • I had a tubal during my C-Section 9 months ago.  No side effects here from it.  My periods are heavier but I attribute that to being off of some sort of hormonal birth control for the first time in over 15 years.  BC always kept mine extremely light and short.  Now I would call them medium on both counts.

I am 40yo and got pregnant while on BC so I did not want to gamble on that happening again.  I did not see the purpose in sending DH to get snipped since I was already going to be in a situation where the doctor could easily do the procedure without adding any time to my recovery.

  • DH and I were considering having a tubal done during my RCS, but then we found out that our Catholic hospital refuses to perform the procedure.  So that was out...  ;)

  • Thanks ladies!

You're right about mostly hearing negative stories. I had PPD with DD1 (vaginal birth), so I'm likely to get it again regardless. I'll talk to my OB and try to get more info from the medical perspective.

  • I had a tubal during my c/s 3 months ago and so far, so good. No difference from my first c/s and recovery, in fact, I feel better.

I haven't had a period yet so I cannot speak to that, but I plan on getting a uterine ableration anyway. I ditto everyone else here, happy people do not log on to talk about their experiences. It's done, and you forget about it :)

  • I am planning on getting it done and from my understanding (talking to dr's and those who have had it done during c/s, plus reputable research) it doesn't really add anything to the c/s recovery.   Like the PP said, only those that had horrible experiences are going to put it out here, those that don't simply move on.

On a side note, in my experience using Google for just about anything pregnancy related usually results in the negative horror stories

  • I had a tubal done last October and I haven't had any adverse side effects. DH offered to get snipped, but I was already on the table and opened up. It literally added about 2 minutes to the surgery.

    Good luck!

  • I'm getting my tubes tied with my next c-section in December, and honestly I wasn't aware of the negative side effects (I too, trust my doctor). I hesitate to Google it now, as it will just freak me out. I'd much rather go through with it than pay for birth control for the rest of my time (I used to pay $30 a month for Nuva Ring, and I'm 31-- so 10, 15 more years of it), or see that DH gets a vasectomy (he will, but I know it's not exactly on his agenda of things to do). Everyone I know who's done it says it was the best thing they ever did.

  • The only thing that was consistant in the articles that warned against it was that if you already have heavy bleeding prior to not do it because it causes heavier periods .the women who had the tubals who had previous heavy bleeding ended up having HYSTERECTOMies. So thats going in twice for a surgery. Also  The problems women all had in common show up 6 plus years later not right away so of course everyone who just has it done is like ya go for it but wait until  going into menopause early happens as this is a usual side effect a few years after it.. I know someone personally who swears that She is Bi Polar because of her tuabl and how bad it messed her howmones up. Vasectomy will be safer on you but you have to be careful there too because my sister in laws Mother had her husband get one and She ended up pregnant in her 40's with her son Austin So those arn't 100% either .. UTI's have my vote..
  • LOL I mean IUD's have my vote not UTI's (was just reading a post on that )
