Lion King for a 4 1/2 year old?

I just can't decide...DD#1 has been asking about it, has read the book at school (she came home telling me about how Simba's dad died - I thought that was going to be the scary part), but I can't decide how she'll take the movie?  I remember crying about it when I saw it (older than DD is).  She had nightmares after Snow White (I did not remember the scary huntsman in the beginning who was supposed to kill her) and I can't decide.  Any thoughts?

  • We got it for DS who turned 4 August 28th. He keeps asking to see it again. He loves it!  I don't know if he really understood Simba's dad was gone forever.  I'm sick of watching it thought, very depressing for me.

  • Both have mine have seen it.  But DD doesn't seem to get scared at all by that stuff.  Heck she's seen sleeping beauty and didn't bat an eye at the dragon and that's pretty freaky.  You can always skip the stampede scene.  You can also spin it by saying his dad comes back because like he says, he'll always be with him and it is how it is meant to be.  DS sings Hakuna Matata all the time and we had to check out a book on lions from the library so there are a lot of positives with the movie.

  • This was my little cousin's favorite movie when he was 2-3 years old (back in the day when the Lion King was new and first out on VHS tape- ha ha!).  So as I recall, it's fine for the age, and I plan to pick it up for DD this week (she's 3).  She also found Snow White scary, but loves it now that we've talked through the scary parts (she just yells at the bad guys in the movie that she doesn't like them and they should go away and be nice- it works for her).  So my advice- buy it, watch it with her, and talk about it.  Definitely buy it, though- it won't be available forever and even if she isn't into it now, she probably will be right about the time they put it back in the "vault."  I'm kind of bummed the Lion King is only in theatres in 3D, though.  I think the story is okay for a little one, but the 3D glasses do NOT work with my little fidgety one.

  • I have the DVD and my DD has been watching it since she was just under 3. She loves it. She's 3.5 now and we took her to see it at the theater and she didn't flinch. But, she doesn't get scared easily and has no problem with any of the villains in any of the disney movies.
