We are flying to England on Monday. It will be about an 8.5 hour flight & we are trying to decide if we should put DD in her carseat or not. I'm thinking she will be easier to control if she's strapped in. The down side is she WILL kick the seat in front of her. We've flown before & I couldn't get her to stop at one point, frustrating for all involved (but we were in business class so the guy moved his seat back forward & she could no longer reach it), we will be in coach this time. So if she weren't in her car seat she couldn't kick that seat.
WWYD?
Re: Carseat on flight
I would probably do no carseat - for the person in front of you. Also, I know my ds like to lay down on the seats when over night flight. Good luck

If I had a choice I wouldn't bring the carseat on the plane. Last time we flew we didn't bring one and it was so much easier. As a PP mentioned, DS didn't want to be strapped in the whole time and since we didn't have any place else to put the carseat he'd then end up on our lap or trying to play in the aisle.
When we didn't have his carseat he sat fairly happily in his seat where he could play, move around, look at the window, and as you say most importantly NOT kick the seat in front of him. Plus he was able to lay down to take a nap.
This must have been on Virgin?
We fly to the UK often and stopped using a car seat with ds at 18 months. The kicking of the seats is the worst part and very hard to control when they are in a car seat. We use a CARES harness for him, which is just as safe, super easy to carry and use.
We use a CARES harness as well for flying. I've never used a car seat but I have heard from people that if possible, strap the seat in RF so they kick their own seat and not someone elses.
We use a CARES harness too. I used an infant seat when LO was younger and the harness is so much easier! He liked it and we called it his "seat belt."
