Anyone else not having a "nursery"?

I've been reading all these posts about what people are doing to get the nursery ready - not just buying a crib but doing actual construction work, painting, etc. etc. I know this is a normal part of nesting for many people, but just wondering if anyone else is not going to those lengths? We MAY have a second bedroom when the baby comes (not sure yet), but if we do, it will be a combo guest room/office/place where the baby sleeps once it's out of our room. I don't think the baby will care about decor or having their own room until they're quite a bit older.

Is anyone else working with limited space, budget, or motivation, and just planning to fit the baby into the space you already have? Or am I a crazypants?

Re: Anyone else not having a "nursery"?

  • Where I currently live, there is no spare room for a nursery. So in my head, I am planning it because we are planning to buy a house and will be able to have a nursery. But I have to find a job first........so it may or may not happen. But I like to picture everything I'd do in my head and hope it can be a reality.

If we can't, we will just try to move into a bigger rental for now and at least have a space for baby, our bedroom is even too small to put a bassinet anywhere in it.

  • Well, we won't be painting walls or doing any construction, that's for sure. lol. We rent, and I like the wall color anyway (very pale green).

But we are having a dedicated room for the nursery, which means we are going to have to rearrange the house somewhat. H's drums and the litter boxes are in the room now, and they'll have to go in our spare bedroom (which is not really suitable for a nursery b/c it's across the house from the master, has french doors, isn't well insulated, and has no fan), and our spare bed will have to go in the attic. We considered putting the bed in the baby's room, but I don't think there'll be enough room for it and the rest of the baby stuff.

  • I'm thinking maybe some baby appropriate decor and furniture in our spare room will be the babies room.  We rent and our apt was just renovated so I'm not going to paint or refloor or build Rome or anything.  Baby will have a comfy separate quiet space, I'm sure that is enough to keep em' happy for awhile.

  • I'm not doing a "nursery" because I have no place to do so. I regret it though!

  • We're aren't really doing a nursery. We have 3 bedrooms, but the 3rd bedroom is going to stay an office/ guest room. Dh is looking for some positions right now that will probably take us to another state, so we will probably just rearrange dd's bedroom to accommodate both of them. It doesn't make sense to a whole nursery only to have to move 3 months later. Luckily, DD's room is neutral so it shouldn't be too hard if the baby is a boy.

    Edited for clarity.

  • The baby's going into the "blue room" which is a spare bedroom we have that's right across the hall from ours. DH has been mentioning since we moved in (in Jan) using that for a gym and I kept telling him it wasn't gonna happen, LOL!   If we DO buy the house up the block/across the street then the baby will be "virtually" in the same room, spare bedroom right across the hall from us.

  • Right now we don't have the room for a nursery so baby will be in our room for a while then sharing a room with SS (he's 7 and absolutely thrilled with having a little brother to share a room with).

We were thinking of using a third of the garage and adding another room but that is a little bit in the future, right now we're on a baby budget.

Ours is the "blue room" too, which we will be painting if we have a girl.

We are going to do some home improvements though, we have to get new flooring. Our current carpet is old, and wasn't installed correctly, so nails stick up randomly. We hammer in when we find one, but others creep up. Not conducive to a baby crawling. I will be glad to have new floors, but it is pricey...

  • With our first we had a spare room but we just painted it a really neutral color and got furniture.  No real decorations.  We knew it would not be our forever home so we didn't want to go into all of the effort.

Once we move into a new house we will probably do something a little more though.  Assuming we don't have the baby yet!

  • Depends if we move before the baby is born or not. If we don't we won't paint or anything bc hopefully wecwill be moving shortly after the babies birth. If we move before we will do a nursery.

  • Oh yeah, we also aren't going to be hanging much, if anything on the walls b/c they are concrete and hard to get nails into.
  • Baby is staying in our room for the first 3 months, at least.  Then when we move to our new apartment/condo in the fall, baby will have their own room.  The room in the new place will have furniture, pictures, and decor that makes it sort of like a nursery.  But we definitely won't be painting or doing anything big.  I would rather go big for a themed room when the baby is old enough to care.

  • We just decided not to move into a 2 bdrm.  It's more money and would mean extending our lease that currently ends in April (baby time!). We'll go month-to-month when the baby is born which is still cheaper than the 2 bdrm.

We are going to put the crib in the office nook that's under the stairs in our apartment.  I'm taking Tambcat's idea and going to put up a blackout curtain/room divider. (Thanks Tamb).  I'm going to stencil some cute branches in that area.

So I guess my answer is 'no' and 'yes.'

Side note, Isn't it weird that this time next year our babies will be 6 months old???!!

  • No nursery here. We live in a two bedroom townhouse, and I really want to keep DD's room baby-free until she can be trusted to keep choking hazards put up or the baby can be trusted not to eat them.

The only baby furniture we'll have are the pack n play, bouncy chair, and maybe an exersaucer. The baby's stuff will probably stay in the living room, since we spend all of our day downstairs. We'll cosleep at night.

  • It's our third so I don't think we're going to do the whole matching furniture, chair rail and cute decorations this time around. The baby will have his/her own room which is currently our guest bedroom.  I need a new crib because both of my other cribs have drop down sides but I already have a dresser that will work that I'll stick a changing pad on. I'm not doing a bedding set this time and I'll see what I have to put on the walls. I loved doing nurseries for the other two but we never used most of the stuff.

  • We rent right now, we wanted to wait until I was done with school before buying a house (at least 3 years out).  We live in a 4 bedroom/3 ba house, 1800sqft, built in 2009 with a fully fenced back yard in a small suburb right at the border of the city limits.  We LOVE our house!  It has very neutral colors (lattes/taupes/tans) with while baseboards, doors, and moldings through out the house.  No need to paint, we can just add wall decor to change the look of the room.  We are using bedroom #4 as an office/storage right now, and will be turning it into a nursery for the baby, but we will have some moving around to do in the house.  Right now we are planning on having the baby in our room so when the baby cries it doesn't wake up our older girls in the middle of the night, and eventually moving the baby into the nursery after 3-4 months.  Our master bedroom is right next to the kitchen and laundry room and there is no need for a nursery if I'm going to breastfeed, ( I might just be lazy and don't want to walk across the house in the middle of the night).  Our master is big enough for a crib and a dresser for the baby, but I don't know how long that will last before I'm ready to move the baby into his/her own room.

We are planning on getting bedroom #4 set up before the baby is born, because I don't want to do it once the baby is born, it will be more of a hassel with a newborn and trying to get the house together too.

  • We did a minimal nursery with DD.  We painted the walls green and yellow and bought a cheap bedding set ($30) and hung the quilt on the wall.  The new baby will get the share the room with DD once he/she is a around 6 months old.  At the moment, we don't have enough rooms for both to have their own rooms.

This is our current debate. It's so much cheaper to stay in a one-bedroom, but at what point will we go crazy??

  • We are struggling with the space dilemma as we have no room currently for a nursery either. This makes me feel like a terrible neglectful parent already as I read everybody elses plans for a grand baby suite. If I had the space I would probably go all out just for fun. I have to remind myself that its not like the baby is gonna care but... nursery stuff is so damn cute. We are planning to upgrade our living quarters shortly after the baby is born until then we're just gonna do the best we can. I don't even plan on getting a crib til after the move. I figured a pack n play with bassinet and changer would be more space friendly.

  • Our guest room will turn back into a nursery soon. We did gender-neutral furniture and colors the first go-round. Just have to freshen up the paint a bit.

  • Nope.  The baby will be in the spare room/my closet room (that might have to go ;))/ office/place where all my books live.  I would enjoy putting together a nursery, but I also think that this is a good exercise in what is really necessary.  I don't want to get too wrapped up in stuff with my kids (but it is definitely in my blood) so having no nursery is probably a good thing!
  • You are SO not a crazypants!! We only have a one bedroom as well, and we are planning on sticking with it until the baby is close to a year old. We will manage just fine with a cosleeper attached to the bed, a dresser that will double as a changing table, and will try to "minimalists" throughout the whole thing. Who knows if our families will allow us to stay that way or if we'll be overrun by well-meaning gifts, but it's the goal, anyway!

  • we are renovating and moving into a new house (aiming for before baby comes so that we dont have to move a newborn) but there are no actual bedrooms there currently and there is so much construction to be done before there will be.  I am so stressed because I am such a planner and want to "nest".  My husband is a carpenter and is working like crazy to try and just get the house ready for us to get in there before our due date never mind get a nursery set up.  Its out of my control for the most part.  I planned on having baby sleep in a basinet in our room for a few months anyway and Im sure that will be just fine with him/her!

  • No nursery for us.  We currently live in a one bedroom apartment, so obviously the baby will be in our room.  We plan on moving out after the next lease cycle is up, but by then the baby will be about a year.  I know its a long time to have baby in the room, but its all we can do.
  • It's reassuring to see a number of people in one-bedrooms. I want to believe we can do it - I actually like living in a small space, because it forces you to keep things simple and buy only what you need. But it's easy to feel like I'm nutso when so many people are creating dedicated nurseries. Glad to see I'm not the only one on the minimalist train!

    all of this.

my husband and i live in a two bedroom, but the extra bedroom is the office.
i'm due April 1st, and i plan on keeping the baby in our bedroom until our lease is up (end of July). then we'll be moving somewhere else anyway and can get a bigger place.
i plan on asking for gift cards so i can buy real furniture when i have room for it!

  • We are doing a nursery in the bedroom across the hall that currently hosts the treadmill, a futon and a tv. We will take out spare bedroom and turn that into the gym area. All our family lives in the same area pretty much and guests can still use the futon. We are keeping our office too. Our house is brand new construction and we bought it with a family in mind, so all we will be doing is painting, adding a mural and putting a rug over the wood floors to make it warmer (in addition to the new furniture). The only ones that are going to be upset are the dogs that sleep on the spare bed during the day :)
