Anyone NOT getting a double stroller?

Just wondering if there is anyone who isn't getting one or if there is anyone who doesn't use theirs as much as they thought.  DD will be 21 months when this LO is born (i'm having a RCS on 12/30) so I've been checking out double strollers.  They just seem so big and cumbersome to maneuvor (even the ones that are supposed to be easier i.e. the city select).  So i'm thinking since LO is due in the dead of winter, I'll probably just wear the baby and either put DD in the stroller or shopping cart and then decide if i really need/would use one once the spring/summer rolls around.  Interested in others' experiences or thoughts!

Re: Anyone NOT getting a double stroller?

  • We needed a double stroller, I would be lost with out it, but there are plenty of people who do just as you described and wear the LO and then when they older one is old enough they walk.  If you wore DD and you are comfortable with it, then I would hold off on the double, but I will mention that there are some good stroller sales in the middle of the winter!

  • I'm hoping to get away without one.  DD1 will be 23 months when DD2 comes along.  She already prefers to walk when we're out and about than be in the stroller.  Like you, I plan to wear DD2 in my moby and walk with DD1 or have her sit in the shopping cart - if she will!

One case where a double stroller would be nice is for going to the zoo or other places where we're walking for a long time, but we won't be doing that stuff in the winter.  I figure if I can do w/o a double for the first several months, I won't need one.  And if an occasion arises, I have friends I could borrow one from for a day or two.  Hopefully I'm not being totally naive about this though...!

  • We never got one.  Mine are 25 months apart.  DS was at the age where he wanted to walk everywhere and he had calmed when we were out and wouldn't run away all the time.  If they were any closer in age, I probably would have gotten a double stroller.

  • Personally I think a double is essential.  I wouldn't want to have to get LO out of a carseat and into a wrap in the freezing cold.  I'd rather keep LO snuggly warm in their carseat and just snap it right into the stroller and go.

  • My girls are 19 months apart. I was going to wait and see about getting one next spring, when I thought DD1 would be ready for a Sit-and-Stand, just for things like the zoo and the mall. I was just going to wear the baby and/or let DD1 walk until then.

Then I tried to take them both to a doctor's appt by myself. Came home and ordered a double stroller that night :)

  • Just examine your lifestyle and see.  I cannot imagine my life without my double strollers.  I wouldn't be able to do the same things, go the same places, and feel secure alone with both of my kids.

My second child was very big.  He is almost 11 months now and weighs more than my 2 year old.  Wearing him for long periods of time (even in an Ergo) is not happening.  And my DD, though well behaved most of the time, has typical toddler meltdowns sometimes.  Add to that my solo parenting (DH has been gone since May on a deployment) and you can see where I'm going.

I usually go on a long walk every day.  We all enjoy it.  My kids can look at the ducks and see other kids, I can take a deep breath and get a little exercise.  We use the BOB Duallie for this.  In addition, I try to get out of the house at least once a day for an errand or to the playground or zoo or mall.  For this, I use my BJCS.

If I was the type of person who dind't like to exercise with my kids and didn't enjoy getting out of the house everyday and who didn't do most things solo out of necessity MAYBE I wouldn't get a double.  But even still, I just can't see how a typical active mother with two kiddos so close in age could really get away with it.  I can somewhat see how you could do without a stroller for one baby... but two?  Notsomuch.

This works until your 2 year old decides to have a meltdown or temper tantrum and you have your newborn in a wrap so you cannot pick your toddler up.  I have been that person (ONCE - only once) and was saved thanks to the kindness of a total stranger who was understanding of my situation.  I didn't do that again.

(though I do occasionally wear DS in the Ergo and put DD in a shopping cart.  But I never take both kids into a mall or open space without a place to put DD if she has a meltdown... cart, single stroller, double stroller, something.  It is unsafe).

  • I'm going to see if we can get by without one.  I plan to wear one DC & the other can be in my single stroller.  I'll wear DD1 in my Ergo if I don't want to take the baby out of the car seat.

  • Thanks all, this is super helpful!  I'm sure I will be like PP and be ordering one the second I head out somewhere.  DD has numerous toddler meltdowns and yeah when you're carrying one, it would be very difficult to pick up the toddler!  All good points!
  • I rarely use my single stroller- even today DS will be in a ring sling or the Ergo while we spend the day at a local festival.  We'll use the stroller tomorrow when I have a lot to carry.  I wore him all the time and hated carrying the infant seat.
I have a double picked out that I could get quickly if needed, but for now I plan on wearing one and using the stroller for the other when needed.  I think some of it depends on where you live and what you do.  I live in a very rural area and the mall is like a once every couple of months trip.  Visiting zoos are rare, but we spend a lot more time hiking, playing in the woods, going for walks.  I can't do any of those things in the dead of winter, so I'll have a few months to figure out what works.

  • My boys are 24 months apart. We got a double in preparation for DS2. Turned out he HATED the car seat with a passion until he was about six months old so I wore him exclusively into the winter months. It was a PITA. I had to take my coat off outside in the cold, put on the carrier, put the baby in the carrier, and put my coat on over the carrier. I would have happily left him snuggled up in his carseat had he been happy there like my first. Long story short, I'd get the double. Winter babywearing isn't super fun.

  • I am not getting a double right away because you can't use strollers here in the winter with all the snow.  I don't use strollers in the mall or shopping, I'll just put the carseat into the basket of the cart and my daughter will sit in the front.  Here though we have two tierd shopping carts so you still have room for stuff that way.  When I'm walking outside baby will be wrapped and in a carrier on me and my daughter will be in the sled.

Come April though we WILL be buying a double, though probably a sit n' stand because our daughter already loves to walk so having a stroller she can hop onto and off of on her own will be great for her!  I can't imagine going through the full summer without a stroller that both can use though because a 2 year old still needs to rest their legs while walking!
