Question about stats and effacement

Last week at 36 weeks, I was 2cm and 50% effaced. Today I was still 2cm, but 80% effaced and apparently the baby is very low and putting lots of pressure on my cervix.

I am having contractions daily (both BH and crampy/consistent) which seem to be leading me to efface more.

Once I am 100% effaced, what keeps everything in there - like my water from breaking? I know the fact that I am only partially dilated helps, but if I go for a long walk I am afraid things may start up.

With DS, my water broke I was 2-3cm and 80% effaced.

I actually want my LO to bake a bit longer, so when I am contracting, I lay down and take it easy.
