Handling things with DS #1 while pregnant ?

Hello!

I'm now 18 weeks pregnant and steadily expanding!! This week I have had a lot of RLPs and Braxton Hicks - enough to have to take the day off of work yesterday - they were every five minutes! Anyway, ultrasounds and internal exams showed that everything was fine... but...

My question is how to handle things with DS as this is happening. For example, I just tried to put him down for a nap but literally couldn't as it was so uncomfortable for me to lean over the crib. So I didn't fight him down, I've just decided to let him play until he is too exhausted to fight it! This is also becoming a problem with picking him up so much. I guess I should mention that he is a big boy - over 25 pounds.

DH usually helps a lot on the weekend and in the evening, but he just threw his back out (a recurring problem from an accident years ago), so I really can't ask him to help...

I hope that things will settle down in my uterus in the next few days, but doctor's orders for now are to take things easy. How do I do that??

Any experience/advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  • It's really hard! :) Do you have friends or family or a sitter close by you can have help out, even if only for a couple hours a day? From about 20 weeks on, I've been trying to teach my DD to play more independently because she is such a mama's girl and although it's taken a lot of time, she is a lot better now that I am 36 weeks! When she does want to be picked up or held, I usually just sit down on the floor with her instead of picking her up. As for getting him into the crib, I'm not sure. I do not have dr.'s orders to rest, so I just put her in even though it is really uncomfortable, especially this last week, because I know I can rest if she is!!!

No, I don't have anyone who can help and we can't afford extra help at the moment.

That said, let me clarify that I'm not with him all day - only from 4pm five days a week, and then full days on the weekends. So I do have a generous break from the physical rigours most days, but it's still getting tough! Also, I mentioned that DH usually helps out in the evenings, but that is only IF he gets home before DS goes to bed (which is only about 30% of the time).

I put my DS in the crib standing. Can you do that? I have heard that some people use step stools. Is your kiddo walking? I try to make him walk everywhere that he will walk. The hardest parts are bathtime which I only do on daycare nights, getting in and out of the high chair and going up the stairs which  I now usually try to make him do by himself.

It depends on how easy you are supposed to take it. I have had a few contractions and I usually lie down on my side and have water. I also have a very childproofed half of the living room so I can put him there and lie down on the couch for a few minutes if I need to. I suggest getting all your childproofing done now before you get into 3rd trimester. Sometimes DS just has to wait a bit- I have to take care of myself and this baby too. Not easy but you have to do what you have to do.

Unfortunately DS has taken his first few steps, but I'm guessing it will be a while until he is actually walking, so that isn't an option yet. However, I do look forward to it being an option in the last few months when things are really tough!

I've only had one bad episode of the BH, and I'm hoping it was stress-related and that if I just learn to stay more calm it won't happen again! :)

Which brings me to your next point... I'm stressed because we're currently living abroad and in the middle of a long VISA process for my husband (a Brit), so we have no idea when we'll have the go-ahead to move back to the states, and I HAVE to be back by December in order to get health insurance that will cover the birth of the baby. Because everything is dependent on the VISA process, we don't know when we'll have an answer, and we can't really do anything until then (i.e. we haven't bought plane tickets, haven't sold our vehicles here, haven't found a place to live when we move yet, etc.). So obviously childproofing is not an option yet! lol
