I will probably be a stickler. For me, there isn't anything worth having... I'm the type of person that if I broke the rules and god forbid something happened, I would blame myself.
The rules say we're supposed to be giving up lots of things-- sushi, soft serve ice cream, deli meats, wine, caffeine, soft cheeses...
Are you a full-on stickler for the rules or are you bending them?
WHAT? No soft serve ice cream? What can possibly be bad with that?!
I'm a rule bender. I choose to continue what I'm doing, just in moderation. At least until I have to go on the Gestational Diabetes diet. Then I'll have to give up a lot of carbs. boo, hiss.

I'm not giving up sushi. I've been going to the same place for 15 years and have never been sick, and I very much trust the quality of their food. That said, I only get it every 6 weeks or so since I live far away from that place now.
Married in 2008 - DD born in 2010 - EDD 6.15.2012!
Coffee! I will have one cup of caffeinated coffee in the mornings, and if I decide I need a coke in addition to that every once in a while, I plan on drinking it. I am grudgingly willing to give up everything else. Since the findings about coffee are pretty much inconclusive, I don't think it's a big deal.

Never heard the soft serve ice cream. Maybe I shouldn't have had that McFlurry yesterday. I don't know about giving that up (and I will probably eat the occasional Boars Head salami because it might be my favorite salty treat ever - weird, I know).
I will be honest while I am normally a rule bender and feel that people tend to overreact when it comes to being pregnant. But for myself & with this pregnancy I am going to try extremely hard not to break them. I might drink a coffee when it gets colder & a hot dog if the mood strikes, but I'm going to try my best to follow.
I am going to try to be super strict about the "don't" list this time. Can't hurt, might help. With that being said I say power to everyone who goes off the deep end eating soft serve!

Me too. Although to be honest, the only things I will miss are caffeine and soft serve ice cream. The rest of it is pretty easy for me to give up. I'd miss feta like crazy but since pasteurized is okay, I'm still getting my fix that way.

I feel the same way...I'm sure later down the line I'll be more likely to ease up on the rules, but at the moment, I feel like I have to be super careful.

I will stay away from everything except coffee. I was doing well, but I cheated and had a pumpkin latte today. That being said, this is the most energy I have had all week. I've realized I can't give it up completely. I'll probably drink 1 cup of half caf a day.

I had a cold sub last night from a local sub shop. I'm going to cut back on my sub intake but there's no way I can stop completely. I eat at this place 2-3 time a week normally.
I guess I am not giving up soft serve- never heard that one before, and am not giving up caffeine though I will only be consuming minimal amounts. Everything else- alcohol, raw sushi, lunch meat, soft cheeses.. I won't eat.

My Dr. said that having a cup of coffee a day will be fine. That is just enough caffeine for me not to get a migraine from my stupid caffeine addiction.
She said the pain from the migraine will cause stress, which is worse than the caffeine.
The rules say we're supposed to be giving up lots of things-- sushi, soft serve ice cream, deli meats, wine, caffeine, soft cheeses...
Are you a full-on stickler for the rules or are you bending them?
Apparently I'm the only bad mom that will eat/drink any of those things if I want.
I'm not getting my food from some sketchy van on the street. I'll eat sushi from 2 restaurants that I trust (if I want it - last time I didn't want any). The fear of deli meat comes from a listeria outbreak in 1998 when 28 people out of the whole country died (at this point more listeria outbreaks have come from green leafy veggies than meat).
If I have a rough week, once I'm in 3rd tri, I'll have a half glass of wine or split a beer with DH. If I'm tired I'll have up to a cup of coffee a day or 1 soda (no more than 3 cups per week). I'll eat soft cheese as long as it's pasteurized.
I will probably be a stickler. For me, there isn't anything worth having... I'm the type of person that if I broke the rules and god forbid something happened, I would blame myself.
Yep, me too. Nothing is that important to me, even if it's just a 1% chance of being harmful.

I'll be a bad mom with you as well. I had a beer during third tri with DS and would have no problem doing it again. I ate hot dogs, summer sausage, drank coffee & Diet Coke as well. And regarding the Listeria, I was just getting ready to post this:
"Well I suppose you should add cantaloupe to this list as well, since cantaloupe contaminated with listeria are blamed for 18 recent deaths.
According to WebMD:
"Produce is less often linked to outbreaks, although listeria is found in soil and water. Listeria is killed by cooking, but it can grow and multiply in refrigerators."
So does that mean produce is out now too?"
You simply can't cut out everything, you've got to eat something! And all of it is potentially dangerous to mother and child.

I don't give up anything. I eat lunch meat, sushi, drink caffeine, etc. etc. The only thing I've given up is alcohol obviously, but last pregnancy I had a glass of wine in my 3rd tri. I see no problem with that, and I'll probably do it again.

I'm avoiding almost everything BUT I don't see any reason to avoid American-made soft cheeses, since they are all pasteurized, so I'm eating my feta and blue cheese for now. They'll probably sound gross by next week anyways!
Softserve????? That will be a hard one to quit! I'm going to ask my dr if she knows anything about this. I love softserve and usually get in every other week and sometimes more....
Bad mom here! I still have one Dr. Pepper every morning, and after the first tri I'll have some wine here and there. I'm trying not to stress out too much about it, bc I think that's not good for the baby either.
I cut way back on caffeine in 1st tri just because of the miscarriage risk. Once I hit 2nd though, I drink it within the recommended limit - no way I'm giving up my Peppermint Mocha ;-)
Soft cheese is fine as long as it is pasteurized, which most cheese sold in the states is. Check the packaging.
I haven't given up lunch meat in my past pregnancies but it is my ONE aversion right now. If you're concerned, you can zap it in the microwave for 20 seconds til steaming (and then I let my cool back off a bit in the freezer) or get a toasted sub.
I am going to follow the "rules" as much as I can. I gave up caffeine and lunch meat. I didn't know about the soft-serve. If my Dr. specifically tells me not to consume something, I won't.
I am not a stickler but I don't really have a problem not eating any of those things. If I go for sushi I am pretty standard with California rolls and they are allowed (as long as they are imitation crab). I dont really drink caffeine (except if I am at sushi and have a cup of green tea, which my naturopath said was good for me while pregnant). I have never craved icecream (but that could change). Soft cheeses will be easy to cut out because I would usually pair it with a beautiful wine. As for wine, I will sip my husbands on occassion, but just a sip.
I definitely believe- To each their own. So enjoy YOUR pregnancy!!!
Honestly I practically lived in a bubble my last pg and I still m/c. I say avoid the really bad stuff- alcohol, drugs- and the rest in moderation. Don't drive yourself nuts.
I give up most of it up until 34wks if it sounds appealing then I may try it. I try to limit lunch meat and hot dogs though because of nitrates not just listeria. I still have some caffine. no alcohol though but I am not much a drinker nonPG any way like may be 4 times a year. I will miss sushi,( I could eat tuna at everymeal) not just for the bacteria but mercury content.
I will still eat my frozen yogurt, have caffeine, fresh deli meat, and oh snaps... the occasional hotdog. I'm sure there are probably going to be some more but none come to mind at this time.
Re: What will you NOT give up?
I'm not giving up anything but alcohol. The others will be eaten/drank in moderation.

Same reason as deli meats-- the food born bacteria known as Listeria, which often runs rampant in the machines soft serve is served from.

I think "often runs rampant" is a pretty strong phrase - does anyone know anyone who has ever gotten listeria from ice cream? Because I sure don't.

With the reports on caffeine, I'm completely okay with having my morning cup of coffee.
If I'm really craving sushi, I might have a piece or 2.
Gonna try a couple sips of homemade beer at my friends wedding when I'm around 16 weeks, and I'm okay with a couple sips in the 3rd trimester.
Everything else isn't in my normal routine so I won't go out of my way to have anything on the "bad" list.
I'm going to try to stay pretty laid back...
