Any creative, resourceful ideas for nursery furniture on a minimal budget?

Just had a mini freak out moment as I realized baby #2 doesn't have any furniture! With DD my dad made her an amazing convertible crib which she is still in, and I really don't want to take it from her. He used wood that matches the furniture set I had in my room as a little girl and we brought all of that to our home.... What a wonderful gift! With #2, I have been planning for crib and have been introducing DD to the idea of losing the rocker, but this room has a smaller closet and we have no dressers or other furniture. I am thinking a thrift shop or craigslist revamp is in order!

  • I had great success with craigslist with furniture for DS nursery. And we are going to do it again for this LO.

  • We bought a dresser from a thrift store for $40. DH sanded & re-painted it white, and put new hardware on it.   It looks great to this day.   It really worked well with DD's nursery bedding because we went with a shabby-chic look.

  • For DS, we used DH's old furniture (from when he was in high school) which probably would have cost near pennies on craigslist.  I painted it and it looked awesome.  I did blue and green and kept the walls neutral but just as easily could have painted a neutral color if I wanted to go another way.

  • ikea has a lot of simple pieces that don't take up a lot of space.

  • I second Ikea.  I'm actually going shopping there this Sunday, can't wait!!!!  I was looking at used stuff on Craigslist, but we don't have a truck anymore, so getting a dresser home was going to be a huge pain. We don't have the motivation to refinish anything, so buying a dresser new for $125 is more appealing to us than buying a dresser for $50, then the stain and putting hours of work into it. We're also making sure we buy things that our LO can have well into his childhood. We're skipping a changing table and getting a dresser that we can attach a changing pad to. That way we're not buying more furniture in a couple years.

I'm content to sew anything and everything needed for the nursery, so we're saving lots of money on curtains and bedding.  I got fabric on mega-sale and clearance, and there are patterns available for crib sets and lots of baby accessories. It thrills me that I can have a custom look, instead of a nursery from a bag, and saving myself $$ all at once :)

  • My two both have cribs from Ikea (my DD is actually in a bed now and baby #3 will use her old crib). They've held up well, are simple and I think around $150. I seriously LOVE Ikea.

  • Def craigslist!!!!  We got our new DD's bureau and a new headboard and footboard for DD#1 on there!  I'm painting both and they're gonna looks awesome once I'm done.  I'm so excited!  And they're quality pieces not cheap ikea furniture (I LOVE ikea but it IS cheap quality).

    Good luck!

  • I think you'll find some good stuff on craigslist. I would get an armoire that also have drawers in it. We're on a budget with this one (baby 1 got top of the line everything, baby 2 is going to be a walmart & craigslist baby). I have been scouring CL and the consignment shops but really hit the jackpot at grandma and grandpa's house. They're redecorating their bedroom so I'm taking the armoire, a chair, and side table. I found a gorgeous dresser on CL for $50 and got it for $30. It needed a lot of scrubbing but no need to paint or anything so I'm super happy. We found a crib (Graco Shelby Classic) that we like well enough and we'll sell it when it's time to move to a big girl bed. I really want to put a daybed or something in the room for me but I don't know if we have the space or the budget.

  • CL!

Personally we're just going to be using my old bedroom furniture (armorer & dresser) and we're going to redo the vinyl on it (it's currently black & green, we're doing it all black) then we're going to get a used crib from CL and DH is going to do whatever it is he's gonna do to it to make it black.  He said it'd be ok to buy all the furniture stuff but I'd rather use what we already have and save the money.
