Best Place for Maternity Clothes

Hello! I am looking for suggestions on where to buy maternity clothes. I can't believe that I already need them, I am 10 weeks tomorrow but none of my work pants fit anymore. I am 5'8 and pre-pregnancy was a size 4 or 6, depending on the store. I've browsed target and old navy's maternity options online but I'm finding that none of the pants are long enough. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Re: Best Place for Maternity Clothes

  • I really liked Old Navy's maternity jeans, and some of their tops. The rest of the clothes I got were from Once Upon A Child and Motherhood Maternity I will NEVER buy bras or underwear from there again though, because they fell apart!)

Motherhood maternity and kohls is where I got most of our clothing.

Oh yeah, I forgot about Kohls!

  • I got most of my maternity clothes from Old Navy. I loved the jeans, but like you said, the pants I got for work (black dress pants) seemed too short! My solution was to just wear them with flats hahaha...so I don't know what to tell you.

I also bought some tops from Motherhood Maternity and they were nice, but I never bought pants there so I don't know about their length.

  • I've ordered several things online at Gap Maternity and Ann Taylor Loft Maternity.  The Gap jeans are my favorite.  The rest of my clothes are from Target and Motherhood (not a huge fan of that store, but there aren't too many options for maternity clothes).

  • Gap has (or had) long maternity pants.  I don't normally like their jeans, but their maternity pants fit me well.  I'm 5'9", so I needed long inseams, too.  That was really the only place I found long pants that weren't so expensive that it wasn't worth it.  (Like I know 7 for All Mankind has long inseam maternity jeans, but the price is outrageous for the short time you'll wear them, IMO.)

ETA:  I got my tops at Old Navy, Gap and Target.  I also found a good maternity resale store in Austin before we moved.  I'm not sure if they have one up here.

  • Burlington Coat Factory has inexpensive maternity clothes, but I couldn't find any long pants there- which is a bummer. They have cute tops though :) pants run from like 14-20 and tops are the same. I went to the Castleton store- which was below my preferred cleanliness and they seemed understaffed. One of the girls in the maternity section told me the Castleton store has a better baby section and the Lafayette Rd store has a better maternity clothes section. Happy shopping :)

  • I was also told that Motherhood's pants run long. I had lost quite a bit of weight before I got pregnant so I still have my "fat" jeans to fall back on right now. And with you being so small you MIGHT be able to get some larger sized pants to hold you over for quite a while. But at the Motherhood store they sell belly bands. Still not sure how I feel about them, but you could check them out. They're supposed to keep un-buttoned pants up and cover the button and zipper so that you can't tell.

BUT, for my pre-pregnancy jeans, I did the rubber band trick. Where you thread it through the button hole and hook both ends back to the button. You can't tell at all if you wear a belt over it! (I used a pony holder instead of a rubber band though because the thickness made it feel more secure.)

    Good Luck!!

I still do this with my pre-pregnancy pants that still don't quite fit in the waist yet...and DS is about to turn 4 months. Indifferent Hahaha...the diet starts today!

If you can borrow a belly band from someone before you buy a bunch, I would recommend doing that.  I HATED the belly bands - they never held my pants up well.  The rubber band thing worked better than the belly bands, IMO.  But I have friends who wore belly bands almost their entire pregnancy, so it really does depend on the person.

  • My Momma said the same thing, about them not working very well. I found some really cheap on eBay tonight though. So I might grab one off of there to try it out. But I think it might make me self conscious cause I'd be constantly tugging at it. haha.

  • Check goodwill!  Sometimes they have new stuff with tags.  In the Indianapolis area stores, the first Saturday of the month everything is half price, which makes shirts and pants $2.15 and jeans $3.50.  I saw gap, motherhood, and old navy stuff there.  Unfortunately some of the stores mix the plus and maternity so you have to dig.  The last one I found a new with tags cute shirt and they had liz lange jeans NWT.  If you have a store by target, they get a lot of their stuff that doesn't sell.

Old navy was my other go-to place.  I found some great deals on clearance racks in our store that carries maternity--some dresses I have were only $3!

  • I purchased one good pair of jeans from the maternity store and in the 8th month I got a pair of grey dress/comfy pants for work.  I purchased a few shirts from JcPenny which I loved but the majority of my clothing came from Goodwill.  If you search in the Plus section you can find tons!!!!!  I have some really really cute dress shirts that I hate to admit it but I still wear.  Though I wore the above jeans a ton I had some extra from goodwill.

In Greenwood there is a used baby store on US135 and in Indy Southside off Stop 11 (near St Francis South) there is a used baby store.  Both sell maternity clothing too!!!!

  • Looks like you've gotten some great advice already - you can't beat GAP for pants - i've gotten a ton of compliments, and they are so comfortable.  Also, I wouldn't discount The Limited in addition to Old Navy, Target and Loft.  I've been finding a lot of cute things there - even though they don't have a maternity line (I attached a few links of my current favs).  Especially now - sweaters and tops have been so great.  Also found a great pair of leggings (sit low on waist and aren't too tight on your belly).  Good luck!
