Dropping last two BFing sessions

Hi all - Just looking for some opinions here.

Noah nurses twice a day right now, first thing in the morning and right before bed.  I have to go out of town in 2 weeks and need to have him done with BFing by then.  He won't take a bottle so he has to really be done.  I was thinking that starting this weekend I'd stop the morning session and just get him up and give him breakfast since he seems to be hungry.

For the night session - I know he doesn't need it for hunger, because he goes to bed pretty soon after his dinner, and there have been a couple of occasions where he's fallen asleep without nursing and slept all night no problem.  So, I am debating two options:

1.  Drop the night session next week so he gets used to going to bed without it before I leave.

2.  Keep the night session till I leave;  DH will have to put him to bed and since I will be out of the house he may be more willing to be put to bed by someone other than me, without nursing.

Any opinions?

  • I would do #2.  That is how DS dropped the night session, quite by accident.  A couple nights in a row I was either out or busy w/DD so DH put DS to bed.  I was amazed - he was able to put him to bed in less than 5 minutes!  With me, it was always a struggle and he wanted to nurse first.  It's almost like he realized, hey, it's Dad.  No milk here so I might as well go to bed!

Another vote for 2. Dropping the night session was super hard for us and  DS screamed for me for weeks. I think it would be way easier if you're out of town.
  • For us the morning session was the hard one to drop - morning snuggles, stories and songs just weren't the same.  The night session was easy as she was usually pooped and with solids, not that hungry.  That said my lactation consultant suggested the best thing was to drop a session a week so that your supply slows down appropriately too. I don't think I'd leave and let DH face potential unhappiness alone.
