VBAC

How late did you have your VBAC?

I am scheduled for a RCS a day before my due date, but I'm starting to get nervous about needing more time to give myself a chance to start labor. My OB has said several times I can change my mind on the date, etc. Not sure how much longer I want to wait or push this back. Last baby was C/S due to him being very large and no progress so we did a c/s at 41 weeks 1 day. (My choice to c/s vs induction at that time.)

This time the baby seems to be smaller and I really want to try for VBAC. I was not dilated at my appt yesterday, so I'm getting nervous this is going to be a repeat of last time with no progress and baby never engaging.

How late did you go for your VBAC?

  • 40+2. My hospital doesn't schedule before 42 weeks unless there's a reason.

  • If you had no progress with your first until 41 weeks, it's likely that your second will follow course.  I would push back and give your baby time to be ready.

  • 40 weeks and 1 day.  I would have needed to be induced at 41 weeks per hospital policy.

I was induced at 39 1/2 weeks with my daughter after they (incorrectly) diagnosed me with low fluid.  I'm fairly certain I would have gone past my due date with her, too.

  • He was born 42w5d. I was induced. My 1st baby was "big" 9lbs 4oz and #2 was 9lbs 1oz.

I think your chances of having a VBAC are going to be better if you go into labor on your own, even if it's past 41 weeks.

  • I went into labor and delivered at 40 weeks exactly
  • I went into labor on my own both times. DS1 was born at 41 weeks 1 day, and DS2 was around 41.5-42 weeks (I wasn't positive about his due date). Give yourself as much time as possible if you're going to regret not attempting a VBAC, especially uf your first was on the later side. Good luck!

    DS2 - Oct 2010 (my VBAC baby!)

  • My VBAC was 41 weeks 1 day.

I would push it back some to give yourself some time.  If your first baby was late, then the second one isn't really likely to come a few weeks early.  (DS was 41 weeks 1 day also.)

  • I had my VBAC at 39w2d.  I would push that c/s date back if you want a VBAC--you won't even be 40 weeks yet.  I'd wait until at least 41 weeks.

Try not to stress about what happened last time.  As many of us can attest on here, the second time around can be a complete 180 from what happened the first time.

  • 40w1d (although it was by one minute since she was born at midnight!).  With #1 I had him at 40w6d.  They would have allowed me to go to 42w even with GD.

  • 41 weeks and 2 days.  :)   I need to post my birth story!

A scheduled rcs before 41 weeks doesn't seem reasonable...glad your OB will give you time if you need it!

  • Went into labor at 41w1d with DS (actually born 41w2d - long labor!).  My hospital wouldn't schedule a RCS without medical necessity or my preference before 42 weeks though.  If your doc lets you pick the RCS date, then I'd recommend holding out for at least a few days after your due date... But that's JMHO.  GL!

  • Thanks, Ladies. My son was 10.5 lbs at 41 weeks 1 day, so I'm getting nervous about going that far. I ended up rescheduling the cs for 4 days past my due date. I feel comfortable giving it that much time. I am not in the "trying" camp with another 10 lber, and there is no way of really knowing how big this baby is, so I don't want to go so late again. I feel better about having a few more days and we'll go from there. I know everyone is different, but this is just my comfort level. For now I'll be walking a lot of hills! ;)

Glad there were no problems rescheduling to something that you're comfortable with! GL :)

Definitely get walking! :-)  My DS was as big as yours.  DD came after 41 weeks and she was 2 lbs lighter.  Just wanted to let you know that the baby could be smaller for you- I hope he/she is!  Good luck and pushing for labor soon for you.

  • My VBAC baby was born at 40 wks, 6 days.  He was 8 lbs, 7 oz.

My first (c/s, obviously), was born at 41 wks, 1 day after a failed induction.  He was 7 lbs, 6 oz.

ETA: I had my RCS scheduled at 41 wks, 6 days.  That was as far as the OB would let me go, which I was fine with.  I would try to push back that c/s date.

  • i would really urge you to consider the reasons you are planning a RCS for a day before your due date.

i don't know your situation, so maybe there is a reason, but from what you've said in your OP, it's possible your baby was just not ready to be born yet at 41.1.

FWIW, i was 4cm and 80% for weeks with my first and birthed him via c/s 41.5. with my second, i had no internal exams (b/c all they do is get your hopes up or create unnecessary anxiety about why you are still pregnant since you are dilated) and birthed naturally at 41.6.  ETA: that is pretty big! i'm still glad to see you giving your baby a little more time.
