Delivering at Florida Hospital Altamonte - Natural birth possible?

I am interested in delivering with a midwife at Florida Hospital Altamonte because I have heard about their niche of appealing to those wanting a natural birth.  As such, I wanted to know if anyone else has managed to deliver naturally here.  (I am wondering if they say they'll go natural, but end up pushing interventions or pain management).  - Please don't respond telling me you delivered naturally, but were only in labor for next to no time anyways! lol.

(Only other place I'm considering is H2H in Sanford, but they are very far for me, I i felt very rushed in all of my communications with them, and I have not been able to get referral from anyone that has delivered in 2011 as they now have a new midwife - Kathleen is gone).

  • I did not deliver there, but I did deliver at The Birth Place in Winter Garden.  I don't know how far that is from you but I drove an hour to be there and it was worth it.

Jennie is the head CNM there and she also has other CNMs and they are all great ladies.  I delivered at their birthing center and it was absolutely wonderful.  I labored there from 7pm-8am and was discharged around noon.  No pain medications were forced on me, no pressure to do things I wasn't comfortable with, and a very relaxing and caring atmosphere.

She also does natural hospital births if you're not comfortable at a birthing center.

however long the night, dawn will break.

  • I haven't delivered there, but my neighbor had a med-free birth there and thought the hospital was pretty natural birth friendly.

I went to H2H and ended up being transferred to Winnie after 6 hours of pushing and a baby in distress.  They have been very busy with a lot of new patients and have had some changes as well.

Kaleen Richards (the MW you were referencing) actually has her own practice at Tree of Life: https://www.treeoflifebirthfl.com/ .  If I decide to have another, I will go to her since she has hospital privileges and can attend a VBAC.

  • hi- i also wanted to go the midwife/no pain medication birth route & toured FL altamonte & did a meet & greet w/one of the midwives there.  i had thought this would be a good hybrid between a hospital (for just in case) & a home birth/birth center that i wasn't quite sold on...however, in meeting w/the midwife i got the feeling that it was more in theory than in practice.  she evaded my questions about c-sections & heavily endorsed and pushed the epidural when i had specifically stated i had wanted to try without.  im not at all opposed to interventions when they are necessary & nor am i a die hard anti-pain medication person, and yet i still left with not a great taste in my mouth.  when i spoke to my doula, she reported back that in her experience most women ended up with a ton of interventions & that at the end of the day this was going to be a hospital birth.

i ended up transferring care from an ob to a midwife at 20 weeks & delivered my baby girl at inspiration birth center in winter park 2 months ago.  i had a wonderful experience with the whole team there & highly recommend it!  go with your gut feeling & choose what is best for you!
