carseat question

I still have to have carseat install inspected but had a dumb question.  We followed instructions that showed to anchor and seatbelt in the base I thought.  I was talking to a friend the other day that said that if you have anchors and attach the base to the anchors that you don't also use the seat belt.  She seemed to think it was either/or not both.  I always thought the anchors were an added precaution not an alternative.....what did you all do?  Both or just one?

I'm sure they will tell me when I go for the inspection....but curious now.

Re: carseat question

  • You *can* use both but LATCH is intended to be an easier alternative to the seatbelt install.

  • You only have to use the anchors if that's they way you are doing it, you don't use both.  We used the anchors b/c I felt it was more secure than just the seatbelt.  HTH!  :)
  • I went to a car seat safety class last night (free, courtesy of the CA highway patrol) and they said absolutely DO NOT use both at the same time.  Car seats are only crash tested with one or the other and she said that having both might exert too much force on the plastic base or carseat and that the plastic could shatter in the event of an accident.

  • We just had ours inspected on Tuesday, when we went we had it installed with both anchors and seatbelt but they told us it was either/or so we went with the anchors.

  • THANK YOU ALL!!  Directions sure seemed to show everything rather than one or the other so I am glad I asked.  I have much older children, so anchors didn't even exist in most cars when they were born.

  • Did you guys put your car seat in the middle of back seat? I went to inspection yest and he did in back of passenger. I would prefer in middle.
