taking out milk again - ?

So, we did a milk challenge about 3 weeks ago. I'm bfing, so I started with baked milk, then yogurt, then cheese and butter. (I don't drink actual milk, so the challenge stopped there) LO did great.

Then we started adding milk to her diet. And she got a cold about the same time. Sneezing, mild fever, MIL had the cold also. This was over a week ago. She is still congested, but not showing any other signs of the cold. When she doesn't eat dairy she seems fine, but when she has something with dairy in it, she gets congested.

It seems to be her only symptom. And she became really congested for a few hours after eating yogurt. So we are taking the milk out again.

?'s -

should I eliminate it from my diet also, since she seemed to be fine when I was introducing it to my diet?

can congestion be the only symptom? and would this be an intolerance or an allergy?

My pedi is no help - or I would go to him. (i already drive 35 minutes to see him, finding a better one would mean an hour drive)

thanks!

Re: taking out milk again - ?

  • I know of several people that don't tolerate milk well when fighting/just getting over a cold.  Maybe pull it for a few weeks until she's totally healthy again and then reintroduce.

  • I thought my DD had a milk protien allergy and so I was doing a dairy challenge, I EBF and so I was cutting all milk from my diet and I would see some improvement and then the eczema or congestion would come back...I eventually got frustrated and so I got my pediatrician to give me an order for a RAST test, which I am glad we finally did.  It turns out she is allergic to eggs (very small- a 1) and not dairy- easier than me playing with my diet to try to figure it out.  I removed eggs from my diet, and her ezcema is cleared up- now just dealing with some congestion.  So now, I am going to see an allergist next Friday, to determine what other allergies she may have and whether or not she can get the flu shot and the other shots at her 1 yr that are egg based.
