Winter coat for a newborn?

Stella was born at the end of March so she never needed a winter coat when she was a wee one. For Audrey we are going to have a Bundle Me to put over the car seat and I will put a blanket over her, too. Did your winter baby get use out of a heavy coat? My mom bought her a fleece snow suit but I don't think she will be wearing that in her car seat every day...right?

We'll be doing a Bundle Me over the car seat and a blanket over the baby, no heavy coat. We'll probably get a thin fleece coat for him too. We also have a snowsuit, and if we go for a walk or spend time outside he'll wear that, but it's too bulky to wear in the car seat.

you really don't want to put anything except thin clothing between the baby and the harness of the car seat. a blanket & a cover for the carrier should be fine. if you have an infant stroller than the snow suit could be useful for walks when its a warmer day

Heavy coats should never be use in a carseat. The stuffing can become compressed in an accident and the baby can get ejected from the seat. I have read that there have been car accidents where the seat is still perfectly installed in the car with the winter coat perfectly inside the seat, but the baby gone.

We had one of those fleecey snowsuits and used it all the time. It is cold and they are so tiny, I usually had that and a blanket on her. But the majority of our drives are 10 mins or less. When driving to my parents (about an hour), I would just dress her warm and put a blanket.

With E, we used the Bundleme and a blanket if needed. I always warmed up the car, and he wore fleece outfits most of the winter, so he was plenty toasty. My Dad bought him a fleece snowsuit that we used once when we walked to the neighbors to give them some Christmas goodies...

Baby slipped out of the coat on impact and was ejected from the seat, but the coat was still in the seat.

A Real Life Example
In order to become a certified CPS tech, Ellis had to take an extensive car seat safety course and pass both a written exam and hands-on car seat installation exams. "When I took my tech class we were shown a picture of an infant seat with a snowsuit under the harness," she says. "The seat was pulled out of a car that had just been in a crash. The infant was ejected from the seat and the car and was found some feet away from the car, but the snowsuit was left in the seat just as the baby was wearing it."

L was born in Jan and we didnt use a coat and actually last year he wasnt too keen on a coat (or socks) either- so it was just warming up the car and blankets

We dressed him in warmer clothes and used the Bundle Me while he was in his infant seat, then wrapped him in a blanket and warmed the car when we moved to the convertible seat (he was 8 months by then). We did have a light fleece snowsuit like this one that we used for short trips on really cold days. It wasn't nearly as bulky as the other snowsuits out there - more like a fleece jacket.

That is the exact one we had. I seriously loved it. Charlotte really likes to be warm and snug, so it worked out well for us. It wasn't very thick, but was nice and warm.
